Setanta was NOT free on Virgin Media.

The price you paid for XL TV was partly subsidised to cover the cost of the Setanta channels you received. Now come on, it's all to do with MARKETING - if a company says something is free then they have to be able to recover the cost and make a profit from it elsewhere! In this case the money you pay for XL TV included a bit towards Setanta.

Now that Setanta has gone, Virgin are saving money every month, because that would definitely have gone to Setanta to cover their programming.

We upgraded from L to XL as we had the football through Setanta.

With skysports being a large increase, the L to XL was a next best option.

I just called them as it was the only reason I upgraded from L to XL. Got through to the correct department and the first words were 'our systems are not working tonight - please can you call us back tomorrow'.

    I wrote Virgin an email:

"I have been a faithful customer of yours for the last 18 months. I
have the XL package which up until recently included the Setanta
channels. I would like some form of compensation for the loss of those
channels be it in the form of rebate or provision of other channels
such as SKY movie channels. I see it has been argued that this was
'freely' provided to us but this is an erroneous assumption based upon
the premise that the monies that were used to fund Setanta came from a
vacuum, this is wrong they came from our fees.

Please get back to me on this issue."

It wasn't free as such, however, there was no increase in the package price at the time these channels were added, so in terms of being an XL customer, it was an added bonus.

You won't or you shouldn't get anything for the collapse of Setanta. It was a package of channels added to the XL package and have since been removed like many other channels do from time to time.

    Probably not, but nothing ventured...

Fair enough. Is VM not keeping ESPN as a standalone channel free on XL? That'll mean you'll still see the games transferred from Setanta.

Setanta WAS free to XL customers.

Virgin paid Setanta 50p for each customer that had the XL package. The cost was recovered from the people with the other packages. I saw no increase in my bill when Setanta was included.

No, but if you were a L customer, and you wanted Setanta you would upgrade to XL.

    So..

If you had XL before setanta was added, no loss

If you had XL after setanta was added, then a big loss
