So if you set out to warn people then I think the resounding response is that people really don't care.

To that I raise a glass

If it was my own money being very slowy syphoned off then I'd be livid but as it's part of a bonus then I don't think people care.

But that is the whole point is it not? I would consider cashback as my money - I look at it as something that I have earned, it is not a goodwill gesture, not a bonus, not a reward.

If for some weird and wonderful reason Amex decided to give me a reward at the end of the year just because they felt like it then I would not question if it was £1 or £100 - this is real free money. I would be just happy to get it.

This has to be one of the most pointless threads I have ever read: it is going nowhere, seems to have little or no enlightenment value and is extremely boring.

If the thread were a dog they would have put it out of its misery by now.

A number of comments say that Amex are operating within their T&C and hence it makes it right for them to calculate the cashback the way they do.However, they do not call out that the cashback is calculated per transaction and in my experience with every other cashback credit card that I have had (the most recent is the Citi Shell CC which withnell has pointed) the cashback is calculated on the total amount. It is the same for other reward cards such as Tesco and Nectar. This is therefore very much underhanded sneaky way to skim money off the customers by Amex - what would one call this?

Hardly a scam. It was highlighted a few months ago when they changed their terms and conditions. It was also detailed on the statements.

    Hi td,

I asked you about your motivation for posting and you have declined to answer.
So I'll ask again, what is it you want?

If you are incensed then why haven't your made a complaint or gone through the courts.

If you want to DO something about it then go ahead, but discussing this on these boards won't actually acheieve anything, which is why I wonder about what your motives are.
If you genuinely want to change things, then why don't you make a complaint?
(as pointed out warlier the effect may be neagtive).

Yes. You've earned the cashback they give you. You have not earned the money they haven't given you. You might feel they've been unclear in their terms, or you may feel they aren't very competitive, which are both good reasons to go elsewhere... but it isn't like they've stuck their hands in your pockets and taken money out.

    Why not?
If they say they pay 1% of aggregate amounts?
    What's your reasoning?

My expectations given the nature of this board, members would be more demanding for accurate information from institutions and hence would be more sensitive when misleading/incorrect/incomplete information is used to put the customer at a disadvantage. Baring a few exceptions this has not been the case.

By highlighting this on this board and with over 1700 views (hopefully a large proportion are unique) I hope the next time round when it comes to comparison of cashback cards people will be more aware and compare lilke for like - even those who presently defend Amex because at the end of customers should not be taken for a ride.[/QUOTE]

As I have said I have moved away from Amex and gone on to a better deal based on my analysis and which I have shared on this forum. One can take a horse to the water....and all that icon7.gif

Here we go again...icon7.gif. One more time - When Amex says 1% cashback I expect to get £1 for £100 spend not £0.99 or £0.90 or anything else as any less is cash out my pocket.

Clearly your expectations do not gel with reality. Welcome to the real world.

Wonder on what basis you came with the 10 p figure?

Will you still have the offer running if I said that I spent a million pounds @1% cashback each in 99p transactions and therefore instead of getting £1000 cashback I got NOTHING. Still interested?

If you spent £1m a year, Amex would probably have offered you their black card, and this whole discussion would be moot.
