I done it purely by will power which you do need. The withdrawal was horrible but once i got over that i was fine. I now drink other soft drinks like cherry aid tesco's own, fanta cream soda from the lemonade man that comes and i don't crave them when i don't have any.

That's about the only sensible thing to do with Coca-Cola, it's truly revolting!

Glad to see I am not the only one who thinks that this drink is revolting - it's like drinking fizzy mineral water with several teaspoons of sugar in it, but then come to think of it that's sort of what it is. I thought I had/have a 'sweet tooth' but Coke is soooo sweet it really is revolting. Give me a fruit smoothie or freshly squeezed fruit juice any day.

By the way, re aspartame (used in Diet Coke) - there is an article on it here:
"Once upon a time, aspartame was listed by the Pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent. Today it's an integral part of the modern diet." :

I heard that a number of MP's are trying to get aspartame banned - so if you agree you could always contact your MP: http://www.writetothem.com/

jeez this is bad, i smoke and i have to drink coke, tea or beer if i do smoke, i always said it was cos water was too 'thin' to drink with a fag (smokers will know what i mean) i need a more substantial drink to go with a fag. (yes im bad, im unhealthy, leave me alone!!!) recently though, ive been joking that extra mints are addictive, but after reading this maybe they are, if i dont have any mints at night i go mad like i havent got any fags and cant stop thinking about mints! mine contain that aspartame rubbish too, im aware of all the bad stuff in that, and its also really annoying when you go to a supermarket and try to get a bottle of cordial, 99% say 'no added sugar' (ie full of aspartame) this shouldnt be allowed, why have they not banned it?

It's not just diet coke that's bad for you.

I watched the diet doctors about a month ago maybe more and they took a perfectly healthy guinea pig and made him drink fizzy pop for 2 weeks. He quickly went onto diet drinks but they made him feel ill as much as the non diet ones.

If I remember he put on 4 lbs in 2 weeks felt lethargic, got lots of spots and more!

Since then I haven't touched any fizzy pop and only drink soda water/water.

As I don't drink coffee and have the occassional cup of tea then diet coke and irn bru were my mainstays and i drank gallons of the stuff.

    Thankfully not anymore.

    Cheers

Another coke addict here. Although I don't drink the branded stuff as it is too expensive. I drink litres of a pepsi max style drink a day

I drink herbal teas my favourite and cheapest is fennel tea which can be drunk hot or cold made from fennel seeds just go to any asian supermarket and buy a large bag for about 90pence.

If you go to any supermarket just check out the herbal tea section some you will like some you will not, its just trial and error.

Also I drink elderflower cordial ( this does contain sugar) but its a fantastic thirst quenching drink.

You can make elderflower cordial yourself but not sure if it legal to pick the flowers off trees in end of May/June will have to try and find out.

If you want to give up any food or drink when you look at it just think of it as POISON EVERYTIME this approach works for me.

I drink this too, as you say it does have sugar in but if you buy the concentrate and mix it with water (or with sparkling mineral water) it's a delicious and very refreshing drink and the amount of sugar is small once you have diluted it. The one I buy is Rock's - they do a whole range of fruit cordials - http://www.rocksorganic.com/rocksfullrange.htm

Less than £3 for a bottle of concentrate and it lasts for ages (I dilute it more than the 1: 5/6 they suggest as I find that too strong/sweet.)

Fresh fruit smoothies are delicious too - either ready made or even better juice your own in a blender/smoothie maker. If you have a juicer you can also juice fruits like apples as well as vegetables.

    Ooh, I was requoted!! LOL

I have not had another since that cracking headache a couple of weeks ago, really, I feel fine. I think it was a habit more than addiction really, and that heacche I had was an absolute cracker, making me very sick indeed. Really, I gave it up cos of the money. I think Id still drink the odd one if it wasnt for the risk of the headache. Instead, Im drinking squash at home & work ( way cheaper, and a way of getting the water into my body that I struggle with) and plenty of tea, but then I always did drink lots of tea. When Ive been out I had a vodka & lemonade or cranberry instead, just havent really fancied it. I have alwayts struggled with the ethics of drinking coke cos of the coke factories in INdia and the tragic impact on the enviroment, which Id always minimised cos I didnt feel strong enough to give up. I have had one can of DC in a month, it made me sick, and I havent missed it one bit. MSE saving on that alone - about £60

    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I'm not addicted to Coke but I am to coffe and when I had the flu earlier this year coffee tasted so disgusting that i gave it up for about 3 weeks. I thought that I was starting to get arthritis but after a few days of not drinking coffee, all the pain in my arms disappeared. Unfortunately i have gone back to coffee now but dont drink so much of it and my arms dont hurt very often.

I used to get through 48 cans of diet coke in a week on my own - now I get 24 cans for a month for me and my OH. I noticed that when I was drinking it constantly, after a while I became incredibly anxious all the time. Sometimes going literally nuts - freaking out almost. It's like it rose my anxious levels to danger levels. Now I have 1 can every 3 or 4 days I'm ok. Same happens with me and coffee - decaff or caff - same happens. So I limit myself with coffee to 1 or 2 cups a week (usually at the weekend) and stick to camomile tea for the rest of the week, or calming tea by tetleys (which I'm finding harder to find right now). Hubby always seems to get a tummy ache with dc too......
