Just came across this on the net

cola2liter.gifCoca-cola was originally promoted as a drink "offering the virtues of coca without the vices of alcohol." Until 1903, a typical serving contained 60mg of cocaine. Today, it still contains an extract of coca leaves. The Coca-Cola Company imports eight tons of coca leaf from South America each year -- a substance that, if carried into the country by any regular citizen, would result in their arrest and incarceration for "drug trafficking..."

It's no coincidence that the name "Coca-Cola" starts with the name of the leaf used to manufacture cocaine: the coca leaf. From the late 1800's, Coca-Cola contained varying amounts of cocaine (about 60mg of cocaine per serving in 1900) all the way up until 1929, when cocaine was finally removed from its formula. That was when all the doctors and dentists who were prescribing coke to their patients said, in unison, "Guess we'll have to start actually addressing their medical problems instead of sending them home with more cocaine." Simultaneously, Coca-Cola executives probably said, "Guess we'll have to find another ingredient that's highly addictive." Hence, caffeine. But that's not until later in this story.

The "Cola" part of the name comes from the "kola" nut -- a nut containing yet an addictive chemical: caffeine. Combine caffeine and cocaine and, not surprisingly, you get a powerful drink called "Coca-Cola" that benefited strongly (from a marketing point of view) from the addictive traits of the narcotic / caffeine combination. It's "The Real Thing," all right, real substance addiction! Hard drugs and Starbucks, all in the same cup! Not surprisingly, the Coca-Cola company claimed all sorts of health benefits for their product. Coca-cola was introduced in 1886 as "a valuable brain-tonic and cure for all nervous afflictions." Its slogan in 1900 was, "For headache and exhaustion, drink Coca-Cola," a slogan that now seems ridiculous for a beverage perhaps known best for its ability to cause obesity. A 1904 Coca-Cola slogan claims, "Coca-Cola is a delightful, palatable, healthful beverage," and even in recent years, Coca-Cola has called its product "a wholesome beverage." In my view, this is sort of like your neighborhood crack dealer saying, "Yep, this here crack will cure that cancer in no time!" Of course, Coke finally took the coke out of their formula, but they're still using coca leaves.

  • if i remember correctly, diet coke is full of aspartame, which is a sweetener and is not good for you in the slightest. on another forum i use, a guy posted this:
Been drinking quite a lot of Diet Coke in work recently. Just the odd can to start off with but recently I've been drinking 3 or 4 cans a day and to the point where i've actually been craving it. Been a bit disturbed by this and initially thought it was something to do with the caffeine in it but after a bit more research on the net it appears that the sweetener in Diet Coke 'aspartame' is a seriously dodgy drug. Heres a few things I've found out about it.....

    - Coca Cola done a report into the safety of aspartame in the 80's and concluded that it was unsafe to put into their drinks as their was too many questions as to its safety. 10 years later they started included it in Diet Coke which coincidentally coincided with the sales of Diet Coke doubling.

    - Aspartame/Nutrasweet doesn't actually make food or drink taste sweeter. It tricks your brain into thinking that you are eating/drinking something sweet. So if you're drinking a can of coke and eating food the food will taste sweeter.

    - The ingredients in aspartame are aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methyl
alcohol. Methyl alcohol is a chemical that breaks down in high
temperatures and turns into formaldehyde. Gulf War Syndrome has been linked with soldiers guzzling litres of diet coke in the baking heat during the Iraq War.

    - You don't lose weight if drinking Diet Coke because aspartame suppresses seratonin and makes us crave carbohydrates.

    - Aspartame/Nutrasweet's 40% Aspartic Acid is an "excitotoxin" in the brain and excites neurons to death, i.e. it kills brain cells and causes other nerve damage.

Here's some links to some websites I found.....

  • Caffeine maybe, but the most addictive ingredient is sugar (try making someone who has 2 sugars in their tea have just one - grrrrr!)
Also, any repeated action can become a habit.

    ps. I hate the stuff...yuk!

When I first started on Atkins after living on sugar for 20 years, it was harder than giving up fags after 13 years and regular drinking for 5. In fact, at one point I thought I was going to die and that's no exaggeration!

So cola doesn't actually contain cocaine any more??

    3. To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl....... Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean.

That's about the only sensible thing to do with Coca-Cola, it's truly revolting!

As far as i know from that information NO IT DOES NOT contain cocaine any more but it is scary to think of how far they will go to sell an item.

I came across that by doing a search on aol for "addiction to coca cola"
