  • OK - 20mins on an 0845 number charge later - they are going to ring me back. They said that they were much busier than they normally are and the call may not come until tomorrow.

The reason I went for this card was that it was free of a bal xfer fee. At the time there were 2 cards on offer - 1 was a 6 month without bal xfer, and the other was a 9 month with bal xfer. This is was what I was told by the CS agent at the time.

I have just looked at my T&C's and I am astonished.
I applied for the 6month card, yet my contract says that I am on the 9 month card??? I know they can give you a record of what you entered on the web when applying - so I will try that if they don't back down. Then again the contract is the important piece.

My hunch on this is that they sent out a load of 9 month contracts to people who had applied for 6 month deals, and hey presto. Now they've realised and want some money out of it.

I should have looked at the small print more carefully - odd I usually do. :embarasse

I've tried telling them where to stick that and have been on the 0845 for over 20 minutes but they are not budging! They reckon it was in the T&C's we signed and that is the only mantra they will keep repeating on the phone!!

Have had a look at the T&C's that came with my actual card and it says "May" charge a fee but as the website advertised no fee I trusted them and still signed it!!

When I made the balance transfer I even confirmed witht the operator that this was the case!!

This is clearly a case of false advertising and I have already shot off emails to the following:-

    Amazon
    Halifax
    Trading standards
    Watchdog
    The financial Ombudsman
    Advertising standards council

If you have had this letter I strongly suggest you do the same and we may be able to get something done about this!!

I got my letter today too. I also confirmed that the fee was 0 when I made my £3000 transfer by phone. I even waited for the statement to confirm the transfer fee was 0 before making another transfer of £1500. I have also phoned the 0845 number and they have registered a complaint. I should hear back in about a week.

I don't see how they can apply these charges after so long. I recon the fee they want to charge me is £80 (50 +30). Please give full email addresses for Amazon, Halifax trading standard etc.

I dont see how they can charge anyone a fee who specifically checked with a CS rep there was no fee. If they were told there was not then at the very least they have created an ambiguity and as such you are entitled to take any interpretation you choose.

I have just phoned up to make an official complaint and they are still quoting the T&C's mantra!

Will hear from them in 5 working days.

In the meantime I would urge everyone tom make an official complaint. It only tooka couple of minutes!!

You won't have any luck with the Financial Ombudsman at this stage. They won't even look at your complaint until you have exhausted all Halifax's complaints procedures. Also, Amazon themselves will not be able to help. Halifax administer the card.

Yes, we received a letter. I transferred a balance in June and specifically asked that same question 'are there any balance transfer fees' They said no. Yesterday I phoned them up, they just said that I should read the Terms and Conditions. I asked them if they could listen to the original conversation, and they said that not all calls are recorded, I replied that it was very lucky then that I had recorded it. I then played them part of the recording of the original conversation whereby I very clearly asked if there were any fee's and the answer came back 'NO'. After hearing this taped conversation they were obviously a bit taken aback, and had to talk to a Supervisor, after about a minute he came back and said that they would E Mail the complaints dept and say that they had heard this recording, and that I would hear back within 5 working days. The reason I taped this original conversation was because I did read the Original T&C and I thought the wording was ambiguous, as it didn't clearly state that there would be no fee. With this evidence I certainly don't intend to let them get away with charging £50, at the same time I don't want to have my card cancelled as I'm still getting 6K interst free until next year. By the way, they also tried to pull the stunt that recording calls is illegal if you don't state its being recorded, there is some truth in this but I replied that we do (as we do because we run a small business).
I can only conclude that Halifax is loosing a lot of cash now they've been forced to reduce their charges, and are trying to scam cash out of the 'Credit Card Tarts'

By the way, I also applied for a 6 month free interest and was also surprised to see 9 months given.
