Wharfedale LCD TVs - are they any good?

  • We had a 20" Wharefedale tv it lasted 13 months. Sound but no picture. Apparently this was a common problem I found out trawling through the net. Argos were no help at all as I was going round in circles phoning different departments. They wore me down in the end and the tv went to the tip.

True about the brand name, I remember when wharfdale came out with some great speakers. At Argos we sell loads of these because they are an Argos related brand, same with Cookworks, Challenge, Acustic Solutions & Beanstalk. The LCD's have changed for the better recently, well they have in the recent catalogue, new one coming out in Jan 09. They look a lot better and I was plesently supprised when I installed several on display for the current catalogue. Wharfdale as a name is only used, the components are from private manufacturers who have to stick to strict rules before we sell the items. At Argos we sell for the mid to lower ranged buyer who wants a cheap item, rather then quality (which obviously increases the price), other brands go cheap when the model is out dated. Wharfdale give you what you want for less, but the cheap components used by the manufacturers used to be the problem. But thats changed with the new manufacturers, quality is key. The TVs have increased in price, but you can't go wrong with the new sets. I haven't taken any back for the new catalogue, and I hope this continues for the next one. I just got my Wharfdale 37" Ex-Display for less then £200, and the picture was quality. To be truthful I didn't want Wharfdale as they sold out to cheap manufacturers and they never looked good. But this is turning into old news for the future, Wharfdale (a.k.a. component manufacturers) are making good changes ('-'). p.s. Most Integrated Freeview on TV's if not all are refundable, set top boxes are not because some need to be registered (this helps when stolen boxes are used) so all are exempt, TV's just plug & play.
  • My friends bought a Whafdale maybe 1 & a half, 2 years ago & started to have problems quite soon. First being a thin line from top to bottom on the left hand side of the screen, then alot of ghosting (despite other attached electricals being taken off to see if that was the problem). Then recently (last 3-4 months) when you turn it on you get nothing & have to turn it off & on & off & on etc etc to try to get a picture. Eventually it happens but sometimes it can take ages! Not great when the 2 year old wants Barney on there & then!!

Anyway, they have sent it away to (hopefully) be repaired at the mo.

I must admit after seeing their probs it would put me off a Wharfdale. I also bought my LG in Richer Sounds & was very impressed, esp as if you see the TV they have cheaper online & in stock (take details so they can check this out) they will undercut them. I got over £80 off my telly doing that!

Our Wharfedale CRT TV finally gave up the ghost in November, but had never been very good, so on Boxing Day I splashed out on a Sony KDL32V4000. Can't believe what a gorgeous picture it is, compared to our naff old Wharfedale CRT TV!

Sorry to be thick, but can you clarify what this sentence actually means, please? All are exempt from what, exactly?
Thanks to all who post constructively.
