Ok an update on this situation. The single mum in question is now 4 months pregnant and getting married in 3 months.

She has told a relative that even after they get married she will still claim her and the bf live apart as he as another address and if so "they cannot touch her".

She is very open about her arrangement. I for one am outraged that the powers that be sit back and do nothing in these type of situations.

From a practical point of view it is very difficult for the authorities to prove that a couple live together as husband and wife. One of the key factors is if there is a financial relationship between the two but obviously this will be denied by the persons involved and they will make sure that nothing goes through bank accounts. If he is registered at another address and has financial liabilities there like the payment of rent or mortgage and council tax then it is very difficult to prove LTAHAW, and in fact they may not be LTAHAW for the sake of benefits.
By itself, things like staying overnight nor having a sexual relationship or going out together are not evidence of LTAHAW.

The sad thing is it is genuine claimants that suffer the most. Some people are living in povery while others take the p***. These fraudsters mean there is less in the pot for everyone.

    hi

Why should people be able to "work the system" and get away with it. I totally agree that some people on benefit boast about how much they get and tell me i'm a mug for working! .

My wife has been told exactly the same several times. I worked out how much better off we would be if my wife claimed to be single and was shocked. Even after paying for a room in a house for me to "live" in we would still be about £100 a week better off.

sound like someone I know, think now she is claiming to be living with the father/husband to be as they are waiting for a flat through council.

She get's child benefit, DLA etc which she spends on herself, OH's wages (works full time) goes on bills and their son (obviously pay little or no rent) and he WON £140,000 on lottery!!!!

Baza2 What makes you think that Princess Donna is lying about how much benefit she gets to live on?

Many people get very little, my son used to get £54 a week job seekers allowance and he was living alone, he did get his rent paid but not the service costs which were £9 so he had £48 a week for services, food, travel and clothes, haircuts etc. Do you think that this is enough for a grown man to live on even short term. Here you pay £8 ish for a mens haircut in a barbers, but if you are not well presented then you will not get a job.

I think that the benefit system for anyone without children is very poor, you do not get enough to live on - barely enough to exist.

You should have a sense of pride and fulfillment then. Dont become bitter and angry about what other people chose to do. You haven't condoned it, you've done your bit and have informed the authorities. Don't you think it's time to move on now?

As has already been pointed out these things do take time and I am not sure what you are expecting to see? To gather the information necessary does take a while, banks take several weeks to supply the required information, surveillance may be undertaken etc.

If your report was of good quality then chances are it will be investigated. If your report was of lower quality then it may either be referred to a compliance officer to visit and check the information (see the other threads on this) or they may hold it on file for future reference.

It is possible that she has already been spoken to - how likely is it that she would tell you about it if she had?

If you haven't done so already try contacting your local Council. They will have a hotline to report this. I would recommend that you call, rather than fill in the form as then they can get as much information as possible in order to have the best chance in any investigation.
