  • No, just common sense and company policy (21 for some things, 18 for others)

But for checkout staff dealing with the public is part of their job - some of those customers are going to be nice - others not so. The staff just have to cope or get another job away from people!

Dealing with difficult people is a life skill and not a bad lesson for them to learn. At least in that kind of job they leave it all behind when they walk out of the shop and don't have to think about it til the next day.

We do 'challenge 21' although most places are reverting to 25. It can sometimes be amazingly hard to guess someones age and with more pressure from my employers, extra police test purchases and on the spot fines etc everyone who could possibly be too young gets asked for ID. As far as I'm concerned if you look/are young and don't carry ID and expect to be sold age restricted products then that's not my problem. I'm always polite and professional when I request ID. I'm 24, look a fair bit older :( and carry my driving license as a matter of course.

Theres a huge differance in being difficult and abusive, Noone should ever take abuse in the workplace, And people who do abuse shop staff should be prosecuted.
  • When spotty mouldoon cashes up and rings the till, they then should say, Sir that will be £10.32 Please. This is the pooint that the offer is made to me. When I pass them my £20 Note, I do not want their greasy mits thrusting the change back into my hand, but here is your change, Nine Pounds and 68 Pence. I will then put it in my pocket.

Should Spotty Mouldoon charge me for a bag, Spotty Mouldoon can get off their butt and put said shop back on the shelf

And they also should be polite as the CUSTOMER is always RIGHT.

A long, long time ago when I was a spotty youth I had a part time job in Marks and Spencer. Till op's were (and presumably still are) required to check the size of an item of clothing and say it out loud to the customer. This was supposed to ensure that if any items had ended up on the wrong hanger the customer was made aware before they took the item home. In the case of ladies brassieres you were also required to remove the item from it's box and check that it was the correct size according to the box.

Luckily most of the time I worked in menswear but every now and again a lady, trying to avoid the queues elsewhere, would bring this purchases to the menswear till. I'm not sure who was most embarrased when I had to fiddle about with the bra and state out loud 'this is a size 40F madam'. Then again I'm sure some of the ladies probably quite enjoyed the experience!

It's not just the check out operators that get it in the neck, it's also the staff on the shop floor, I used to work at Asda, and one year, in the week leading up to Christmas, I was filling a fridge and got rammed in the back with a trolley, I was in that mcuh pain that when I turned round there were actually tears in my eyes. I looked at the woman that did it, and all I got was a load of abuse about being in the way of customers.

I lost it at that point (the only time I ever did) and told her that she had a choice, either come in and buy what she wanted, in which case we needed to stock the shelves, or we could leave the shelves alone and she could go home empty handed. She had another rant and rave at me, and I just left her to it and walked off.

I explained to my manager what had happened, and told him that if she put a complaint in about me being rude to her, then I was going to counter complain for assault. He went back out on the shop floor as she was at C/S complaining about me, he went over (he was duty manager that night, so it was his job anyway), listened to her side of the story and then asked her why she thought I got angry at her, to which she said she didn't know, so he asked if the assault could have been anything to do with it, she flatly denied it, so he took her in the security office and showed her the cctv of the incident, she still protested that she hadn't done anything and was told that she had a choice, she could either leave the store immediately or wait for the police to come and investigate the assualt. She left the store.

I'd have drug her outside and shown her "Assault".
