I think I might have made a bit of progress - or maybe not!

Regarding European Drive - they drive on the right in most European countries.

    from here http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/guide/resources/offersavoy.html

Many public and guest rooms have delightful views overlooking the Embankment riverfront of the Thames. On the other side of the property, the hotel has its own road leading onto The Strand. It is the only thoroughfare in the United Kingdom where vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road.

Across from the Savoy is Embankment Gardens, or the Savoy address is Covent Garden - going round in circles there. It doesn't really fit in with the tree though.

    Thoughts please?
  • Just a glimmer of an idea -there is a statue of Dr. Johnson in the North choir of St.Paul's Cathedral . One of the other statues in North St Paul's Cathedral is Lord Frederic Leighton- can't find exactly if he's "next to" Dr.Johnson or not.
Lord Leighton was one of the prime movers in the Holland Park Circle of artists, architects and patrons which gives a decent link to Holland Park Avenue as per jaycat62's earlier thoughts.
If could prove the statues are neighbours might be enough?

Along the tree line, there is the Elfin Oak in Kensington Gardens which was moved from Richmond Park. Doesn't fit tho!

    Hi,
    ok from here: http://www.gardenvisit.com/book/london_and_its_environs_1927/25_st_pauls_cathedral/the_crypt_of_st_pauls_cathedral

These 4 are buried next to each other Bishop Creighton, Dean Milman, Canon Liddon, and Sir Arthur Sullivan.
Sullivan ( half of gilbert & Sullivan) has been all over and has links all over. Canon Lidden however we can't find yet as he's not on the wik link. ??????

    Found this FINALLY on him
    Liddon, Henry Parry (1829–1890)

English clergyman. His High Church sermons and writings had a strong influence on the Anglican religious thought of the period. He was prebendary of Salisbury Cathedral in 1864, and was appointed canon‐residentiary of St Paul's Cathedral in 1870.
He was born in North Stoneham, Hampshire. He later became Ireland professor of exegesis at Oxford University. At the time of his death he was engaged on a life of Pusey, which was finished by others and published in 1893–94.

    No link!!!

This has been driving me crazy!

I've looked at all sorts of links: I've even looked at the 360degree view show to try and visualise any other the historian's statues/tombs etc. I've considered the link to Kensington Gardens might be Sir Christopher Wren, who redesigned Kensington palace and has a memorial in St Paul's. The european drive bit I've been trying to think laterally, a car race in europe like le mans rather than a road/drive? Nothing fits perfectly though, I can't see anything around Kensington that fits that yet!

I like the idea of the Savoy road driving on the right, and that potentially links in with Sir Arthur Sullivan (statue near Milman) who produced the Savoy operas, but that is a way away from Kensington Gardens/elfin oak where the end of the clue fits so well! Unless is a stroll through Covent Garden and the elfin ok part isn't right........

    Help......
  • The tombs in St Pauls are Nelsons' & Wellingtons. Others are placed around them.

Nelsons column. European Drive is The Mall which was copied off drives in europe at the time.

Or it could be Wellington Arch & Constitution Hill.

The only thing I can see so far is that the clues do seem to be in roughly a straight line heading westward so not just for the first clue. That's why Strand seemed to fit as the next clue after St Pauls and somewhere in Kensington fitting for the next one. But even if it is the Elfin Oak, the final clue is "its mover stayed where you finally will be" so that's not even the final destination. The Elfin Oak was moved from Richmond Park but it's not clear who the "mover" they refer to. It was moved as part of a scheme of George Lansbury who was leader of the opposition for a while (so Westminster Palace) but it was Lady Fortescue who offered it and there is very little information about her other than she wrote a book.

I think Jaycat62 may be right as the end being Pentonville Prison where Lansbury 'once was', it fits the clue and having looked at the past clues and solutions some of the links are so tenuous I would never have got them!

The other avenue I'm looking at is assuming the Milman/Sullivan//Savoy links are correct the clues lead to Covent Garden, so I'm trawing through that looking for something that connects 'strolling through the garden' with an 'old tree'......
