Internet gone - help!

Er, sorry to ask the obvious, but have you checked to see if there is a dial tone on your line?
Assuming your line is working, have you plugged the router into the BT master socket-this will eliminate any possible faults in your internal wiring.
The reason BT ask you to do this is actually to save you money. If you ask for a call out and the fault is on your side of the master socket, then this is your responsibiltiy and not BT's, and they will charge you a minimum £122 call out fee. So it's well worth excluding this possibility before you call BT.
Which model of router are you using? Is the ADSL light coming on when it's booted up?
No do state and ask the obvious with me and computers:D Our broadband internet is on a 2nd line here and that phone is working fine, Our router is a Netgear ADSL modem DG8349
Think Il call it a night now as got to get up early in the am, I wont be calling BT out but might have to wait until the techie guy I know can come over to try and sort it out.
Thanks everyone for your help - Id normally press the thanks button for all replies - but this PAYG connection is not that good. Il check in tomorrow am before work but then not online here whilst at work so not ignoring any posts!
Only thing I need strong internet for is the Travelodge sale on Thursday at 6am as I really need a £9 room in London for a concert Im off to in November, really hope my internets back by then!Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

Ok, I'm told for Netgear you have to type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar to get into the router settings! User name=admin password=password, unless you've changed it!
I still reckon it's a fault on BT's end if it was working earlier on, and its not now!
With all the thunder storms, I wouldn't be surprised either! Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Thanks will write that down and try once back home after work. Could not get on via the dongle either today.
I get so stressed without the internet!!!
Il try ringing BT tonight but then if no luck Il have to pay someone to come out to sort it - hate this stress:mad:
But thanks for all the help everyone!Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

If it's a fault on BT's side you won't have to pay anything. If the internet/ADSL lights are not coming up, then everything indicates a fault on the line or at the exchange.
But as previously advised you need to plug your router into the master socket and try it from there. If you report a fault to BT, this is the first thing they will ask you to do. It's a 5 minute job.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks will try that tonight - see what happens, want to double check all connexions/leads too again. Might be able to get tech person round tomorrow night if I/BT cant sort it.Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

No luck still Dad was on the phone to BT for an hour as was I in the evening everything checked and they say it is the router. Have to say the conversation was going round in circles!
Given up now got friend of a friend who is IT programming expert coming round - he set up all my wifi and internet before so will hopefully sort it, if the routers broken Ive got a brand new BT hub one they sent me so can replace the netgear with that but he says netgear are the better ones.
So hopefully back online later tonight, so glad he can fit me in before his hols Sat.
Fingers crossed I might be back online for the Travelodge sale:rotfl:Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

Just reporting in off very slow PAYG conncetion that keeps cutting out!
IT friend of friend been and says Its a fault with BT not the router - plugged in BT homehub we had been sent - that wont work either - been on the phone to BT who say they see we have a connection - but we need them to send someone to check the line between the exchange and us.
They have not phoned back as yet what a suprise.
Im going to get stroppy soon and press for someone to come out and check things as cant see how Im going to get back online anytime soon?
Really fed up - I so needed a £9 Travelodge room in the sale tomorrow but cant see this dongle connection being strong enough.
I hate being without proper internet but cant see how Il sort this, IT friend away for over a week now - Il have to get stroppy with BT!Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

Another update - BT just rang and have found a fault on the line have said it is their fault!!! They will now be sending someone out to look at the problem and to check things at the exchange/our house if needed.
They will not sort out the router here and my tech friend is away but he has said to leave the BT home hub connceted and once boradband is on there I can switch leads back to the netgear router and Im hoping that it will all work then!!!
They will refund us for the days we have been offline but thats it.
Dont suppose I can get compensation for the costs of the PAYG internet Ive had to use and for the hours Ive been sat on the phone:rolleyes:
Why they could not of found this out the other night - Ive paid for someone to come out too but not too much.
Wish we were not with BT but tied to a contract now.
Thanks again for the info and help here - I might be back asking for how to sort the router once BT have got sorted!Sealed Pot Challenge number 8 Amount declared £365.50.

I feel it would be appropriate to ask what router your using...
and Is it wired or wireless?
Also, it your effort to check everything are you sure you put everything back the way it should be? the one that springs to mind is putting 2 ADSL filters inline with eachother.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
