WD40 kills the little b*ggers and if you then spray it along your doorsteps it keeps them away for ages and ages.

My sisters house gets invaded every year with ants, I will give her this tip as she gets really down about them and locks herself away from everyone, wont let anyone in her house once she has seen them and spends hours bleaching the kitchen etc. Will give her a can of this as I am sure ds4 has more than one can in the shed.:D

It's true, you can't buy the old type of Borax any longer, it is now Borax substitute. It does everything that the old Borax did, except they substituted the stuff in it that kills the ants and other crawlies.
I bought my last boxes of the old Borax a year or so ago, and was lucky enough to find the last packets in the shop, I mix it with icing sugar then lay a small trail along where they march, and this works on my raised beds.
However, DH does pest control and sprays anywhere that isn't growing food and it keeps them at bay really well.
Alot of the poisons that are used in pest control are now not for use in the E.U any longer, and more will be banned in the near future.
An old tip for ants though, they wont cross peppercorns.

That's a surprise! Google boric acid and you'll find you can buy it all over the place.

Borax is not Boric acid, a very different compound and chemical formula. Borax has been banned in the EU for domestic uses.
  • Raid ant spray(in a red can) Is the only thing that gets rid of them imediatly and keeps them away for a few weeks

Chalk- ants HATE it. If you draw a chalk line, ants won't go NEAR it.

Cucumber skins contain enough of a poisonous compound (think it's arsenic?) to kill an ant, they take it back to the nest which kills the rest.

I bow to your superior knowledge, patchwork cat. I see boric acid is about to go the same way too.

Boric acid will work apparently as an ant killer, too so if you can get it, might be worth a try.

I was given this tip last year as I have a nest under the front door step, sprayed WD40 round the edge of the door and none crossed the line :)
