I haven't actually asked it to run anything on start-up but it does go through the palaver of error messages due to the BT Broadband thing (as explained in last para of #31), and also Norton 360 starts running a background update or scan or something as soon as I switch on. There is no way that I've found of disabling that so I have to put up with it.
It's whizzing along now, just because I'm about to log off for bedtime!
sorry should have said, if oyu go to start > all programs > start up and if theres any programs that start up on start then they will be listed here0 -
If you use webmail then the free version of avira is great but it doesn't cover Outlook or OE email. (That is covered by the premium version) Its is my free AV of choice.
I still rate AVG, but disable the link scanner module.Nothing to see here :beer:0 -
(Replying to DGFC79, got overtaken by another post!)
Oh that's interesting, I never knew about that. There are half a dozen applications in the start-up list, including BT Broadband Desktop Help, which I have uninstalled, so why is it still showing on the start-up menu? That explains all the related error messages too.
Anyway must go to bed, I'm all techied-out now. Back tomorrow for another thrilling session lol...I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Thanks Cozworth, I'll search this thread out when my Norton expires and try to remember what I'm supposed to do!

I can't get the Kaspersky free virus scan to open. I couldn't get the link to respond so went into the main site and tried from there, but it is just hanging. Perhaps they have stopped doing freebies
.
A very slow start-up today, and when I was typing some letters and spaces kept being missed (it's not my typing, I don't usually have this problem!). It has picked up a bit now but don't know how long it will last.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Uninstall SLOW PC FIGHTER (In fact its quite possible its deleted something it shouldnt so if there are any registry backups available id suggest you RESTORE them first)
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in RED below
Folder::
c:\program files\SPAMfighter
Save this as "CFScript"
Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
Then try updating and running another full scan with malwarebytes:idea:0 -
How would I know if there are any registry updates available? How would I restore them if there are?
I've sussed out how to uninstall Slow PC Fighter so will do that if you can just advise re. the registry thing.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Sorry. Never used it so not a clem
But most registry cleaners have a backup system in place somewhere. Usually just a case of highlighting it and clicking 'restore' or suchlike:idea:0 -
Oh I understand what you mean now, you mean updates in Slow PC Fighter (I think). Thought you meant the registry on my laptop.
Right then, I'll work through those things as you suggest...I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
