You don't need any horrid old BT software to make BT broadband work :)

I don't have a BT Broadband subscription at this address though, as I got it for when I'm at our flat. At first I was carting my laptop up and down, but then I got another one to keep up there, so I have no need of BT Broadband when I'm at home as I'm on Orange here

Now, next crisis! I can't send or receive any emails after doing all those scans etc.

The host 'SMTP' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'POP3', Server: 'SMTP', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

The host 'POP3' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'POP3', Server: 'POP3', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

It didn't recognise me at all, then prompted me to enter my Internet name and password and the servers I send and receive mail on, which I don't know how to find out so I just put POP3 and SMTP copied from the prompt box shown.

Is there anyone out there not fed up with me yet? I'm really worried now if I've lost my email functions. I thought maybe the scans had deleted my cookies or something, but my online banking login is still coming up automatically.

    Aaarrgghhhhh......

When it expires in July I will download AVG (unless anyone can suggest anything better).

Definitely avoid AVG, it may have topped the ratings a few years ago, but it's a poor contender today, bloated, slow and doesn't catch anywhere near as many nasties as the competition.

Avira Antivir is the best free scanner, with Avast coming a close second, covered to death in comparative reviews and various forums. (Ensure you download the free, personal editions not the commercial paid for version - and only install one, not two or more, ensuring Norton is gone first). To be fair Norton 360 is pretty good, so only remove it once it's expired.

Malwarebytes, contrary to some other posts is a good scanner, also I'd recommend SpyBot S+D for spyware scanning, it's a good solid application, SpywareBlaster is good to keep some nasties out, and doesn't use any resources.

CCleaner to remove old temp, cache and other garbage.

HiJackThis to show what nasties are running, post the logs to get help etc.

These are all top notch free to use tools, which have been tried and tested for many years.

Can you access your email temporarily using webmail from your ISP (BT etc, all have webmail) - this will help before you fix all the problems with your PC. If you've got everything backed up, the best solution would be to wipe the hard disc and reinstall windows, but before you go down this route, ensure you've backed up everything you need and have all the settings for your e-mail/broadband.

Start from afresh when you have a bad infection is often the best course of action, as it's a guraranteed fix.

Brilliant! I've got in via Orange webmail, so that's a short term fix.

I don't think I can handle wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows - wouldn't know where to start :o.

I only really use the computer for web browsing, and I have a couple of spreadsheets that I wouldn't want to vanish, so I don't tend to do back-ups :o. I could put them on a memory stick I suppose if push comes to shove.

Would really like to get Outlook Express back to working normally tho', if there is a reasonably simple solution.

Cant see anything else in the combofix log (Doesnt mean its NOT still infected though)

Need2Find Bar:HKCU\Sofware\Microsoft\Internet E..... ~ this will be either found in programs to uninstall or within IE as a PLUG IN. Either way make sure it gets removed

run a KASPERSKY ONLINE SCAN (click to scan 'MY COMPUTER')
    http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/virusscanner
Please post the complete log it creates (This only SCANS it DOESNT delete anything, so we'd need to see anything it finds)
It will probably run somewhere between 5 and 12 hours!

That's one for tomorrow then :). You're a saint for keeping these replies coming you know. Maybe I'll have it cracked by the weekend!

Must say it is running faster now, once it's done all the start-up things that still take a while. I blame Norton 360 for that though.

also do you have any programs to run on startup as these can slow the machine down, just an idea,

Not sure what you mean by that. I haven't actually asked it to run anything on start-up but it does go through the palaver of error messages due to the BT Broadband thing (as explained in last para of #31), and also Norton 360 starts running a background update or scan or something as soon as I switch on. There is no way that I've found of disabling that so I have to put up with it.

It's whizzing along now, just because I'm about to log off for bedtime!
