Thanks everyone, got hold of some padded envelopes and they fit in fine as a 'letter' rather than a package, 76p instead of £1.50 or whatever it was. Still wasted about 3 quid sending the others but have learnt my lesson!

Unfortunatly it still depends on the person at the post office. They say is goes on weight not just size!!

oh no!! Ive just been reading this and currently have DVD's listed at 1p with £2.99 postage. Should I take them off. I didnt have a clue until I came across this. Does it only affect DVD's? I havent got any bids but have one watcher on one of them.....

It is weight and size so your post office is correct.

You need to get yourself a handy little guide to postage costs, or try online here:

You may well get reported or even get a vigilante buyer who buys and then refuses to pay postage. Have you listed in the DVD category?

I didn't think it allowed you to enter a postage cost when listing?? When my BF listed some when they first made the change and he didn't know, when he tried to put a postage cost in it came up saying that the most he could enter was £00.00. Likewise, with the books, I put a higher cost than £2.75 in by accident and it flashed up saying postage costs were too high.

Im totally confused by it so have just ended the items just incase as it let me put them on with postage costs. Whats the reason for it no longer being allowed? Ive been scouring through ebay and cant find anything about it so now not sure if Im breaking any more ebay laws! If it werent for this thread I would still be clueless!

Edit: Just came across a sticky about it so will go read that. Thanks.

I have lots of problems with the large letter vs packet postal charges, most of the time the staff can't be bothered to check it fits through so just charge for a packet. I had to insist on some occasions that they try it!

Its a real problem if you sending some like a t-shirt in a plastic bag. One guy in my post office tips the guage up and tries to drop the item through the slot - obviously its not going fit because a "squashy" item will drop to one end of the bag IYSWIM! He told me the postman wont take the time to flatten it to push it through the letter box. There's a hugh difference in cost between a large letter and a packet.

I have the exact same problem and when PIP came in I actually had to give up a very profitable line of dance items as they were flimsy and as soon as you picked up the packet the material all slithered down to one end. My local PO did the shake and then try and drop the item through the slot which was held horizontaly, and even a sheet of newspaper wouldn't go through with that method.

My large PO say that anything that goes through with a bit of help , and that can include me pulling the item through the slot, is a large letter and I can save a fortune going to that one instead on days where i have borderline items.
