It is not "nowadays". When I got my first passport back in 1974, I had to pay my doctor for a signature. AND he was a family friend! It cost 50 pence: maybe some wizard could calculate whether 50 pence then was worth more than 30 pounds today. At the time it seemed like a lot of money.

This whole countersigning thing is a bit of a joke anyway.

When I was serving in the Royal Navy I (and my wife) had to register every year for a postal vote. Under the rules, I could countersign her application, and as a civil servant, she could countersign mine. It did not say, as many things do, that husband and wife could not sign each others !

You could look up https://www.hpc-uk.org (Health Professions Council) they register 13 health professions, all which can sign, you may no one of them.

I sign, but never charge.

If you look at the list

It's those people who, because of the nature of their trade are:
a) easy to track down and
b) Risk being unable to practice their trade do to being thrown out of their appropriate professional organisation for poor conduct if they help fake passports

yes you are right, i have just recently did this for my son's renewal passport after 5years. His appearance has changed and thuis needed new photos to be countersigned.

Note single dads - you need to provide evidence of PR or a divorce cert and a court order.

any questions i have found the passport office website very good - just go to contact us and ask them your Q. Usually get a reply within 24hrs!! Hows that for customer service!

Funeral director
Person with honours (e.g. OBE MBE etc.)
Photographer (professional)
Salvation Army officer
Travel agency (qualified)

Or is it all in the dodgy handshakes ??

A few years back I signed for a friend as she needed it done that day. I'm not a doctor, teacher, or a professional at all and working in a cattery isn't listed but it went through ok. It's a mad system really.
