£70 quoted by the maintenance man seems rather high, if it took three hours, I would charge £32. Mind you I live in a cheap area, if you are in London, or similar, I suppose it is much more expensive.
The maintenance guy was taking the p****. He obviously didn't want the job.

Even in London you find people will do things cheaper if they know you, work out they live near you or are doing it as a job on the side.

PasturesNew has made it clear if you read her post that she just doesn't want the bother off having to make polite conversation for 3 hours with her landlord.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I lent my mower to a neighbour - she got her 5 year old son to knock on the door to ask (sneaky!).

An hour later her son knocked again to ask me to come over to her garden - silly woman had run over the cable, managed to do something to make smoke come out of the engine and had tried to patch the cable with masking tape!!

Took a new Flymo cable and fan belt (about £25) to get it going again. Lesson learnt. Never again.

Ahh you need to learn the London form of "hello" to your neighbours and looking busy or saying something like "Sorry I'm busy" when they start talking nonsense so you can run away. It has it's uses.

I've never been to London, so don 't know how that goes.

I don't see them ... you can't say hello to people you never see. The properties are angled, not in a row. And they're different sorts. So a clutch of studios at an angle, 4-back-to-backs at another angle, a couple of gallery beds pointed entirely off at 60 degrees, then it's round a bit of a bend.

And I'm about 2' lower than the pavement, the road is on a bend and then there's a hill and no other houses are part of this bit, they're all in their own little roads.

Pastures New. If I thought you lived anywhere near me I would gladly sort out your lawn. Love gardening. Bored cos been made redundant. Wouldn't bother you. Would bring my own mower. Just would get on with it and then leave you with a wonderful garden :T

Damn. I just checked, you're miles away :)

Same age/sex as me though, so I'd not be too nervous at talking to you.

    :)

Pop over and prove it... :)

Where do you live, and what's for dinner?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

My apologies, it was not my intent to offend, I will admit to skimming some of the posts. I withdraw my earlier suggestions.
