MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.:hello:0 -
Yeah, you've seen threads.
So we don't really know how oversized their bags.
So I use my experience witn MANY years of travelling with Ryanair and say that I have never seen it happen with normal sized hand luggage.
This is a Moneysaving website. I can comfortably assure the OP that unless his bag is clearly bulky and oversized, no one at Ryanair is going to give him and family grief at the boarding gate.
I'm happy to back it up with my money. How about you?
So are you saying that someone who starts a thread saying that their hand luggage was too big to fit into the cage so they were sent back to check-in but it had closed and they missed their flight is lying?
Oh, of course they MUST be lying since in your vast experience you've NEVER seen it happen.

I do think it's unlikely that you will have a problem with your hand luggage but as you asked the question I gave my opinion plus my recollection of the experience of other members on here plus my own experience of flying Ryanair plus what the Ryanair website says.
In the end, it's your call - and of course you do have Donnie's rock solid assurance (backed by his money) that nobody is going to give you or your family grief at the boarding gate.0 -
Well PollyCat...did their thread indicate quite how large was their luggage?
How about giving us a link to the aforementioned threads so that we can make up our own minds, rather than depending on hearsay?0 -
I can confirm that Ryanair are now monitoring carry-on luggage very closely indeed. I am a Ryanair 'veteran' (about 100 flights with them over a good few years) so I know that in the past they have been fairly relaxed - but no longer.
On a recent flight from Spain anything that looked even close to the size limit was put in the blue 'cage' - they had a guy standing there picking people out. Mine fitted (just) but then he put it on the scales and declared that it was overweight and I had to go back and do a baggage check-in (with all associated fees) - they would brook no argument and I was told if I didn't hurry and pay up I would miss the flight and receive no refund. There were about another five people in the same situation and the staff were very abrupt with us. I subsequently concluded that their scales were about by around 1.5kg - but its too late to argue after the event and too difficult to argue at the time (they have the advantage on you!).
On my last flight from Krakow they were again asking some people to put bags in the cage, but there was no weighing going on.
My advice to Ryanair passengers is ensure that your bag is within the size limit and a least 1kg underweight to avoid any hassle with their scales. This is clearly an additional revenue stream for Ryanair.0 -

Of course their threads indicated how large their bags were - bigger than Ryanair's dimensions! Doh! :wall::wall::wall:
Don't you think I would have already posted the links if I could find them?
The problem is that there's so many threads about Ryanair hand luggage that it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
It's not a question of "making our own minds up".
I thought this was a forum where people asked for advice and other people's experiences.
I've given my advice based on my experiences.
I've never said to the OP that his hand luggage WON'T be accepted, I've just pointed out my experiences of travelling with Ryanair - unlike you who's put your neck on the line with your categorical statements that everything will be fine.
I just hope for the OP's sake that you're damn right this time.0 -

I hope the OP reads your post, Hauptman, and makes his own decision about hand luggage, rather than taking notice of some of the advice he's been given on here.
Unlike Donnie, who appears to disbelieve something unless he's actually seen it happen, I believe your experience and I hope it saves somebody from incurring extra costs and maybe a missed flight.0 -
Didn't disbelieve it, I am just sure that if the OP has one bag out of all they are travelling that may be slightly outsize, they won't be singled out.
Time will tell.
Dear PollyCat
I know that you are no genius, but what we would be interested in would be how much larger that "Ryanair's dimensions", what shape....?
Let's see...I've been travelling on Ryanair for at least eleven years.... last flight from the S. of France just a few days ago. Before that another country last week.
Maybe there are some destinations where people are known for taking the mickey.
Maybe you should track down those threads and have them merged. Make yourself useful.0 -

Yeah, Donnie, time will tell - as I've said previously I just hope that you've not misled the OP with your determination to appear superior.
Maybe I'm not a genius, but at least I'm not so arrogant in my posts that I refuse to believe anything that anyone else says if it opposes my viewpoint.
You, as a self-confessed frequent flyer, say that slightly over-sized bags won't be a problem.
Hauptmann, also as a self-confessed frequent flyer, says otherwise.
I know who I'd take notice of.
Or do you think that Hauptmann istaking the mickey.
As I've said (why, oh why do I have to keep repeating myself? Are you hard of reading?), there are far too many threads about Ryanair hand luggage.
Oh, in fact here's another one:

Listen, who do you think is going to be measuring your bag as you are boarding the aeroplane?
Don't obsess about hearsay. In all the times that I have flown with Ryanair(many times over many years), I have never seen someone stopped in the boarding queue and told to go back to check in or being refused entry on to the aeroplane until they checked in their slightly oversized luggage.
Last week I flew back from Dublin & a passenger was made to pay the fee as she boarded the plane. Admittedly her bag was bulging & so bigger than the measurements however so were those of many others (including her friends) who were allowed to board with no charge.0 -
I think that the comments speak for themeselves...
goes round picking out bags that look like they won't fit
Admittedly her bag was bulging
As long as it is standard hand luggage size there will be no problem.
I guess that I have to keep repeating myself. :rolleyes:0
