Ryanair- Hand Luggage

Options
my friends and I are flying with ryanair next week, we're just taking hand luggage and were planning to buy sun cream and other toillettries at the airport once we're through security but I've just had an email from Ryain air saying everything including airport purchases must be in the bag at the gate and they may weigh/measure the bags at the gate.

Does anyone know if they are actually doing this? Last time I flew with them about 8 weeks ago the weighed my bag at security but didn't even look at it at the gate.

Yes, they are doing this. Not for every flight, but there is certainly a good chance that someone will be checking. In my experience they don't often weigh bags at the gate, but they do often check the size of the bag and that you're only carrying one bag.

All they are mainly saying is-you can only take one bag-that's pretty well known allready.

just a small point but if you're only going for a short time and buying full-size toiletries/sun-cream at Boots after check-in, remember you'll probably not be able to bring them back with you as they'll be over 100 ml each presumably.

This is the case as a friend of mine found out the other week to his cost because he couldn't fit the bottle of brandy he had bought into his hand luggage. On their terms and also on the email I believe, it says they can deny you boarding with no refund or compensation.

er yes I know the rules I was asking if they'd actually started checking at the gate because it's common for people to buy things in departures and carry them on seperately.

melb - we're going for a week, it's mainly suncream we need to buy because a 100ml bottle would probably only last a day.

Thank you Benjus and Spiro that's what I needed to know.

We travel with ryanair approximately once a month, the larger airports are a lot worse at making you fit it all into one bag. Flying from Durham Tees, they wouldn't notice if we brought a giant suitcase on with us, but coming back from Dublin everytime they stick the back in the holder, check its size etc. My favourite was last time they made me put my half eaten sandwich (literally, was chewing at the time!) into my hand luggage as otherwise it constituted a second piece of hand luggage! Newcastle checks us sometimes, but its very touch and go. Just make sure to leave enough space in the case for all airport purchases to be safe.

I've travelled on a few Ryanair flights recently and they have strictly adhered to this rule. They have the stand for measuring the luggage at the gate and one of the ground crew ( looking decidedly like the Gastapo) goes round picking out bags that look like they won't fit and getting people to have them measured. It's very hairy if you're a bit close to the wire.
