Anyone here with direct experience of either model?

    Yes..........

They're both a bleeding disgrace of an engine!

But do any mondeo's have AWD? erm,... NO

    Erm, yup they do...

Also the starter problem is the same one shared with the Mondingo. Which is the sign of DMF failure.

Out of all of the X Types I've sold over the last, say 2 years they have all had the same problems:

    Horrendous front tyre wear.
    Chocked up EGR valves.
    Rattling bottom roller.
    Noisey diff's.
    Notchy 3rd and 5th gear.

Even though they are a Mondingo, they do seem to be a bit more bombproof than one... Not much, but a bit...

Would I have one? No. Not a bleeding chance!

On a happier note, 05 models got a slight improvements inside and out, which made them a bit better...

You'd be better off buying the Mondeo, that's all the X Type is.

That was uncalled for Chippy, I have a Mondeo, but would love an X type, because I like the finishing touches.;)

Thats unfair Chippy. The Mondeo is a much nicer car in its latest guise!! :rotfl:
  • Like I said in the second post BikerEd, join those Jag forums, you'll get a much better insight into the X Type than you will off anyone here.

Quite true, Jaguar engines come from Ford. Its frame is also based on Mondeo's. Jaguars are always plagued with problems. For Ford, at least they are cheaper to fix.

The Diesel engines actually come from PSA Peugeot-Citroen, at least the 2.2l (not sure about the 2.0l) ;)

Like chris-j has already said, Jaguar engineers spent a lot of time & money in refining the engine to suit the Jaguar brand requirements.
But I think Ford were so impressed by what the Jaguar engineering team had achieved , they may have 'borrowed' some of these developments to improve their own Mondeo.

Oh and it's the floorpan that is shared with the Mondeo; not much else I'm afraid. Ultimately you get what you pay for.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "frame", but the the x-type estate was designed & developed by Pininfarina for and on behalf of Jaguar Cars Limited.
The Mondeo was designed & developed by Ford's own engineers.

Edit: to clarify, the Jaguar x-type estate was designed and developed from the already existing saloon version. Pininfarina only designed & developed the unique parts required to be changed/added to produce the estate version.
The x-type saloon was designed & developed by Jaguar Cars Limited. (with the exception of the floorpan which they did in conjunction with Ford Motor company - if they hadn't been involved with the design & development, there would probably be no transmission tunnel on the floor of the Mondeo and no 4WD x-types ;))

You mean buy a FIAT full stop, don't you? ;)

As to VW/Skoda/Audi..I'll quote my brother who HATES his last generation Pashat that's forever going wrong from new (so much so he's abandoned it and bought an SLK)..

"I should have bought Audi...VW are just Audis put together by a korean rice picker translating a manual from english" :rotfl:
