You'd be better off buying the Mondeo, that's all the X Type is.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Husband currently has a 2L diesel x type (2006) - not sure what you specifically want to know but 2L is an excellent drive - got some really good pulling power, pretty nippy for overtakes etc. We used to have a really big (21 foot) caravan that it towed without problem. I was also surprised that it gets such good miles to the gallon and about £150 on road tax. Going to sell now though, as getting new car & Jag is not as practical as other car we have for boot space. Ours is saloon, not estate.
Beware when buying Jaguars though that when I was researching used sale prices that some of the models hold their value much better than others.0 -
i have a 2.0d but also had a 2.2d est for a few months but sold it for a good profit, the 2.2 is definately a better engine and also 6 speed both engine suffer from egr valves getting clogged up but an easy fix, every one says they are just mondeos, but then a saab is just a vectra, and an audi a6 is just a skoda and so on ,so many vehicles share floor pans, but i still like the look of the jaguar over a mondeo anydayHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. 2.2d might be better for the (probably?) heavier estate?
ps - haven't had any of the valve probs as mentioned above.0 -
i have drove the 2.0d... its a 5 speed... 2.2 faster... more power... but... the 2.0d isnt slow just feels like it needs a 6th gear.
economy not much diff
resale value you will get more for the 2.2d later on, as they are more desirable. so if your buying a 2006 2.0d or 2.2d id go for the 2.2
would I spend 10k more getting a 2.2d... NO definately not.
As you need to spend a lot more to get a 2.2d than you could spend getting a great 2.0d, due to the age the new engine was released.
Have fun, great cars... estates really desirable with the dog brigade! Plus they have a handy window opening too
Make sure you get cruise control, and 8 speaker system for stereo, preferably premium sound. I prefered the sport, but its not everyones cup of tea with noisier ride, and bumpier, than say the SE... due to low profile tyres.
I had a 3.0 sport petrol auto for a couple of years too, great car and AWD.
Most common problems, smoke out of higher mileage cars deisel dust... lol, and also starter motor problems... also the leather on the gear knob and sterring wheel can wear after 100k, looks tatty.
Solid motors, and not comparable to mondeo's, but not saying mondeo's are bad motors, but, I'd have the xtype over one any day of the week. But do any mondeo's have AWD? erm,... NOPlan

Jaguar X-Type (2001 - )
Good: Compact Jaguar, launched as V6 only with four wheel drive. Held price well at first.
Bad: Mondeo based
What's Bad
Over-enthusiastic traction control system can temporarily lock a wheel. Dreive train drone of four wheel drive manuals.
'Official' removable towbars made by Brink are not factory fitted and connecting the electrics can be very problematic so X-Type NOT RECOMMENDED FOR TOWING.
Jaguar had fifth highest warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 126.91 v/s lowest 31.93). Jaguar 2nd bottom of Reliability Index for 2004 combining high average cost of repair of £483.26 with high 42.16 failures per 100 Warranty Direct policies
What to Watch Out For
Reports of clutch failures and drive-train whines. Reports of transfer box failures on four wheel drive models.
Cooling fan failure.
Further problems include erratic slow running in traffic with poor engine response from low revs and lights dimming (both main and dipped beam) for no apparent reason. Several complaints about poor headlight performance.
One Backroomer wrote: "One year of ownership 16k miles. Lots of little warranty claims saved for one visit all known by Jaguar. Weeping washers solved fitting of non return valve, rocking drivers seat mod fitted, boot locking system replaced, car juddered in 5th at 30 mph: downloaded new software: problem solved, drivers door catch faulty, had dried out. Lubricated now OK, next week goes in for two days to have steering replaced squeaking noise, may be bearings and another developed this week petrol guage reads half when full, then dances between half and full, will be sorted same time as steering. Dealership very good and co-operative West Sussex."
Other reader problems with ZF autobox, broken driver seat runners, failed door seal, failed central locking mechanism, climate control not working, boot release not working, whining from the steering rack.
Some of the first X Type diesels sold had similar problems to the Mondeo TDCI 130.
On four wheel drive 2.5s and 3.0s, the front tyres can wear unevenly to the extent of serious wear on the inner shoulders. After 10,000 miles they need checking by applying almost full lock and having a look. Rear tracking is adjustable for toe in / toe out, but cannot be set with some types of alloy wheel because they do not have continuous rims and confuse the laser. Too much toe in will make the steering very light. Too much toe out will lead to severe tyre inner shoulder wear.
On V6s, the bottom hose is held on by a wire clip and can pop off, losing all the coolant. Has been a tsb mod fitting a jubilee clip, but very hard to get at and sometimes not properly fixed.
Automatic transmission failure rate on 2.5s and 3.0s more than 4 years old increasing. If low mileage and Jaguar serviced, Jaguar usually contributes. JATCO advises owners not to carry out AUTOMATIC transmission fluid changes hemselves because it's difficult to ensure the correct amount is added (the gearbox needs to be run to a specific temperature - This requires diagnostic equipment) and probably they will use the wrong oil, e.g. Land Rover Discovery ATF is different from a Land Rover Freelander, and Jaguar X-Type (Jatco) uses different ATF to a Land Rover Freelander (Jatco).
Problem with ZF autobox identified as fractured clutch piston. Apparently common. Typical rectification costs by an automatic transmission specialist is £1,750.

On early cars (6 - 7 years old) outer CV joints may need replacing at a cost of £332 at a Jaguar dealer because both reluctor rings can break causing the ABS to stop working. Expanding corrosion of the cast iron under the alloy rings breaks them off.
Recalls
5/3/2003: VIN SAJAD53L21WC00294 to SAJAH52S73YD17471 (30,183 cars): When power is lost to the external indicators the internal tell-tale lamp continues to flash as if there was no fault, which is in contravention of UK Construction and Use regs. Replace the general electrical control module with one that has modified software. TSBs: Excessive exhaust smoke was covered by a 21.08.06 stage 3 ems update. Gearbox problem covered by a technical service bulletin 14.04.06. to grease the transmission input shaft splines. This has cured the
problem.

X-Type not just a Mondeo, for the diesels Jaguar engineers worked on significantly tuning the diesel engine. Also models from 2004 onwards dealt with the earlier problems the original cars had.0
