If they are not too old you can bypass the wedding list and buy them a bottle of baby oil and the game of twister . Cheap about £12 in total, a real talking point present and it can be fun.

Re above comment even if you don't attend the wedding etquitte i beleive is to not go but still send a gift

So it is etiquette to not attend the wedding of a person you don't know but to send a gift!!!!!!!! I really did not know this no wonder we are all in debt - to be honest anyone who enclosed a wedding list from an expensive shop but suggests they will be delighted with money if you don't fancy buying them something from said expensive shop aren't going to be too happy with baby oil and a game of twister.

I have, but I not a money grabbing person so I would be quite happy with that - wasn't have a go at you Marie but I seem to be getting more and more invites to wedding from people I barely know with very very expensive gift list thats what I was having a pop at.

*love* the baby oil and Twister game idea - it's gonna be on my wedding list!
The most unusual wedding gift I ever bought was a three man tent. the couples list was at Argos but I got a very similar tent form a camping shop for a whole lot less.

A bottle of baby oil and a game of Twister eh? Sheer genius! They will think you are as mad as a hatter - and you will never be invited in any long lost rellies 'kerching!' weddings again! Hurrah!

I think this is a classic example of money grabbing britain as I see it!

I have seen first hand from my mate who I was a bridesmaid for. It was almost like, well weve had to cough up to feed you, so you need to give me something for recompense. By the time Id paid for going back for hen night & dress fittings I was £££s lighter. About 2 weeks before the wedding I realised I hadnt done the present, so I looked on the website list and there was nothing less than 70 quid left. Stuff that I thought, so got them currency for their honeymoon destination to the tune of £40 all i could stretch to, to buy them a dinner on thier honeymoon. My mate looked at it and goes "err, I dont know how much thats worth" ME -)

When we get married me & OH have decided that anyone who wants to can donate cash into a bank account towards our honeymoon, as we probably wont book one straight after the wedding. Some people, esp our family will want to give, but I certainly dont want it to be a pre-requisite for coming to the wedding, in short wedding lists- they just pi$$ people off dont they?

As far as i know it is the norm to send a wedding gift list, i have never been invited to a wedding that didn't have one, however some can be flexible and depending how well i knew the person depended on if i went with the ideas on the list or something much more personal.

But have to say i agree with everyone else that if you don't know the person why go? Send an unable to accept with a card will not just save you money but stress.

Think the naked twister and baby oil idea is a great one................lots of fun, cheap and very memorable :rotfl:

  • My mate gets married and asked for no presents as the main wedding consists of only 20 very close relatives. Some have decided to get vouchers - £50 per couple, so I now I will too. Me and my other best friend are single so we're coupling up for ours.
Its such a tough one. My mate is practically family we're so close and have known eachother so long, so I have no problem with a gift especially as they are being refreshingly down to earth about the whole thing - it will be a nice suprise we've all done it.
I understand the logic of the list, but find it all a bit clinical to be honest. It would be lovely if it went back to the good old fashioned gesture and there are such things as receipts for duplicates.
If you wouldn't buy them a birthday present, then why a wedding present?

I know exactly how you feel, last April a good friend of mine was getting married in her home town in the US. The enagement present £30, housewarming gift £20. There was a hen weekend which set us back £250, then the flights and hotel (probably £600) and then she had the nerve to send us a present list! We (there were about 16 of us going altogether) all chucked in a tenner and bought a bbq. Must say had a great time at the wedding, probably the last time all my mates will go on hols like that before the babies start arriving. But what got me was the lack of gratitude, no thank you on the day, by email, nothing. We all passed it off as her being american and different (the bridesmaids even had to buy their own dresses and shoes!). Then she started inviting all her other (richer) friends round for bbq's "because they had bought them such extravagant gifts". Things came to a head one night and, after some drinks, one of my more forward friends told her exactly what we all thought. Everyone got upset and I would much rather someone had said something before the wedding, she is such a sweet person in all other respects and things are only just getting back to normal.

I think times have changed now, if I ever get married there will be no list, if people want to get me something that's up to them.
