One of the updates probably updated your graphics driver. Usually changing the resolution will sort it out. Then it can be set properly when you come back out of Safe Mode again. I had a similar issue a couple of months back with an Nvidia update Microsoft decided to pump out even though I was on the latest Nvidia drivers.

Have got back online now using the automatic settings for ipv4 address.
Gone into windows update and it seems the one available is sp2, could this be the problem with my pc crashing like it did with sp1?

I wouldn't imagine so. SP2 is a fairly minor update for a service pack. It's possible though and now you know how to fix it. It might be worth just ignoring the SP2 update just now. They might resolve any issues with it in a month or so.

Might be worth running one update at a time to find the rogue one. Depends how desparate you are to get all the updates just now.

In that case ignore the updates and worry about them later :) Looks like you're fixed and running now then.

For some reason your router isn't providing a suitable IP. I would reboot the router and then reboot the PC and try another ipconfig. 169.254.135.176 isn't a valid IP for you network. It should be 192.168.2.x.
