Problems with desk top pc since connecting two laptops to home network

Last week we purchased two lap tops setting them up wirelessly to the home desk top pc.
For this i purchased a belkin g wireless usb adapter and a belkin g+ router.
The Home pc and lap tops are all windows vista and the Service provider is Virgin media.
I am not very good with pc's admittedly and we only use them for surfing the net to sites like facebook and ebay.
I followed all the instructions for set up but still could not connect to the internet. I rang belkin who told me the ipv4 address needed changing and talked me through it. Great i thought we are back in business - the two lap tops have been constantly able to connect to internet no probs (this is how i am writing this) the desk top however is a different story.
Again Saturday i rang belkin and went through the whole set up and configuration procedure and managed to get online however after turning off the pc and only using laptops the kids come to use the wired desk top pc to find it will not connect to internet again. When i click to diagnose connection problems it says "Cannot communicate with primary dns server 4.2.2.2" I have just got off the phone again to belkin and they are saying its a problem with the pc and i need to get a techie guy out to look at it but every thing was working perfectly until they changed all the ipv4 addresses. I appreciate the router is working hence using the laptop but there must be more to it.
Is there anyone able to help further with this speaking in no pc terms so i can understand what to do next? Many thanks for your patience on reading this through.

I'm not really techie either, but I had this problem a while back. I found that reinstalling the router, using the installation disc, sorted it out quickly and easily. My router is D Link, not Belkin, but it may still be worth a try.[FONT="][FONT="] Fighting the biggest battle of my life.

4.2.2.2 doesn't make sense as a DNS address on a home router. I'm guessing that's where the problem lies. Try changing the IP address on the desktop PC to obtain automatically, same for the DNS.
To do this in Vista read here. You'll want to change the IPV4 one again. Let us know how that goes.0 -
The ipv4 was originally set to obtain automatically when i initially could not connect to the internet, it was belkin who said there products required an address which i was given as:
ipv4 192.168.2.20
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
then 192.168.2.1
dns primary is 4.2.2.2
secondary 4.2.2.1:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

Your router should act as a DHCP server which will give you these details automatically. The DNS servers sound like nonsense to me. That's why you can't get internet access.
On a working laptop go to Start...Run... Type cmd and hit return. Then type ipconfig /all and find the DNS servers listed there.
I would definitely change back to DHCP mate. What model of router is it ?0 -
the router is 3000uk belikn g+.
Desk top currently installing updates so will try the automatic ipv4/dns settings after and keep you up to speed. Thanks for your help.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

Wow... I've never heard of them before. They sounded totally weird. Fair enough then. I'd still suggest moving back to Obtain Automatically though. The router should set the IP, gateway and DNS automatically.0

The 4.2.2.x ones are Verizon's DNS. Ping them for yourself.
On sunday it came up that they could not be "pinged".
To ping do i go to the black command screen and type in ping 4.2.2.2?:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j
