This is the second time in two years. The last time it happened was down to service pack one not wanting to install and i had a tech guy come into house to sort it out for me - that turned out to be because it was offering sp1 before i had received all the previous relevant updates and had sent it to me before it was available to everyone else cos the tech guy asked if were anything to do with microsoft.

If pressing power button is only option i would be grateful if you could talk me through the procedure, i.e. will i need to start up in safe mode etc?

The first step mate is to power it off and then power it on and see where we are. Windows should be able to recover but it doesn't always work. Power it off and on and let me know what happens.

It sounds like a problem with the video driver possibly. Can you actually boot up in safe mode ?

OK if you get in via safe mode can you reset the desktop resolution to 800x600 then reboot and start normally. If that doesn't work then go back into safe mode. Do you know how to get into Device Manager to delete the graphics card entry there ?

In that case set it to 640x480. OK everything and then go back in and set it to 800x600 and OK it all again. Then restart normally. Again if it doesn't work go back into Safe Mode and delete the graphics card from the Device Manager. If you don't know how to do this let me know.

I have not messed with the graphics as i was sure this was not the problem, i did ask it to system restore to last known good configuration and is now back up and running with the same fault as before - unable to access internet. So i have clicked to change ipv4 address to automatic and will report back once this has done and any significant changes.
