Some great runs everyone. Great prizes there Idio :-) Hoping some of you can help me beginning to panic. Ran this morning ignoring pain in foot, was a good 3mile run bar the pain, which wasn't so bad that felt I should stop just aware of it. However was still hurting this arvo and has been on and off for few weeks so went to see my GP- he says I have strained my tendons and should rest until pain completely gone (that could be weeks!!!). Have 18mile run planned for friday and then half-marathon next weekend? with only 6 weeks to marathon I really don't want to stop but don't want to make pain worse- any advice?

this is a difficult situation. I was injured earlier this year and until i completely rested up it never improved. Not only that but I didnt really enjoy my runs until the pain had gone.

I think others with more experience will be able to advise whether you can get through, but if it was me I would write it all off and re-plan for a new even in 4months or so. That way you can train pain free and give yourself a chance. 26miles on damaged tendons will be hard and will not be enjoyable.

Dont want to sound negative....its just what I would do but perhaps others would say to push on and relax after??

    Anyway.....good luck whatever you do

I think the GP response is completely predictable and understandable ie you cant be criticised for telling someone to rest whereas if you tell them to carry on and that results in serious injury then obviously there will be much more comeback.

It doesnt sound like anything too much out of the ordinary tbh. 'Strained tendons' are part and parcel of running, and most other sports, you cant really make much progress without straining something from time to time. We term them niggles rather than injuries because normally you can manage them ie just monitor whether the pain is getting gradually worse or gradually better over time.

If running is painful then it is better to walk daily rather than completely rest because the healing process requires bloodflow so it will happen more quickly by keeping some movement going.

But basically it is up to you - if it seems to be getting worse back off, if it seems to be gradually improving live with it. However, I wouldnt let a race alter how you deal with it...theres plenty more later.

  • Hey guys, sorry i've not been around much for like a month! I had a pretty nasty accident..... i fell through a wall angry-smiley-7996.gif did very nasty thing to my spine, back, neck, legs, oh and my left hand was mashed!

Thankfully no broken bones, but from behind i looked like i'd been attacked by a cheese grater lol. Thankfully everything is now fixed, and even SIL has stopped fussing (she's an A&E nurse) but it didn't do wonders for my old knee injury.

It does mean however that i haven't set foot in the gym for a month, in fact it's only in the last week i've started walking my dog again. And the instant and enforced rest means i've put on all the weight i'd lost, and probably more :( i really am actually starting to feel like a big tub of goo :( So tonight will be my first night back on the treadmill, just gonna take it easy tho and see how my knee feels.

On the upside i became debt free last week :D and got the chat of the week in the weekly e-mail :T

I don't tend to look at my watch much whilst I'm running so I'm always interested to look at the data afterwards. I think I was on autopilot this morning as my first three miles were 10:15, 10:16, 10:14. :D

Ooh, pink that sounds as though it was painful; I hope all goes well on the treadie tonight - a big well done on getting debt free :j

    Hi all.

Just checking in to say I'm still alive and ruinning! Did a 10 miler last Friday, before going away on a camping trip for the BH weekend. Squeezed in a 4 miler yesterday before work. Nothing today, as I've got football tonight, but have runs planned on Thursday and Friday. flying of to dublin to see me Ma on friday night after work and coming back Sunday. Not sure where I'll squeeze my next long run in TBH, but hopefully on Sunday if I get back at a reasonable time.

Some nice running going on, hope everyone is well and enjoying it.
