For me, this bit is very concise and relevant "the marathon became a gateway into the sport". Once it was something you build to. Nowadays you get runners training only for one race, it's not part of an individual runner's progression, it is a one stop shop. Do it once, tick it off and never again.

    That is so true.

If you remember the newspaper article I posted last week about Rory McMahon winning a 10K race then you will realise that he is quite a decent runner and has raced some good half marathons and a 15 mile race. However, he doesnt feel as though he will be ready to run a marathon for another 4-5 years by which time he will have got his apprenticeship at the shorter distances under his belt.

He feels that it will be just too painful otherwise.

And yet Runner's World think its should be encouraging any Tom, !!!!!! or Harriette to go straight from the couch to a marathon in a matter of weeks. Madness! Wait for all the bone and joint problems in the next 10-20 years.

Carbs are decried as poison by the weight loss industry for obvious reasons. They are high in energy. If you cut out carbs you can have the same volume of food and consume less energy. This makes sense. As long as you don't need the ready energy e.g. for mid-high intensity exercise. Sadly the Low carb diet industry refuse to acknowledge this, but then they have a vested interest. They will tell you it is possible to run a marathon on an Atkins diet. While this may be possible, it would be the equivalent of hitting the wall at the start line i.e it would be 26.2 miles of very slow and painful running.

Basically if you want to lose weight by doing a lot of exercise, low carb diets are not compatible. You need to simply consume less energy than you burn, while giving your body the ready fuel and protein it needs.

If you chose to sit on your backside all day, every day, carbs are not your friend. But nor is fat or salt.

I think its interesting how we all see food as fuel for runner and think about it in terms of how that 'fuels' the body for each session but a lot of people see food as something different - something comforting or whatever - this seems to be where their problems stem from with the calories in/calories out equation...and therefore they feel the need to try other things like low carbs...

"The couch to marathon in x weeks plan"

Maybe one of the reason so many people do it only once is because they are not adequately prepared because their body hasn't been given the time to adapt (not to mention the high chance of injuries along the way). If you build up properly and follow a sensible plan, running a marathon is a pleasurable experience. If not, it is a horrible ordeal and no surprise if that puts people off from doing it again.

Oh by the way - whats going on at Leeds parkrun on Saturday - why is it suddenly a full on track and field event?? Weird...

Can we do Heaton park please :D

    parkrun leeds gold
(Part of London 2012 Open Weekend)

The University of Leeds invite you to a unique morning of sport and family activity to celebrate London 2012 Open Weekend - and the three-year countdown to the start of the London Olympics.

Activities get underway at 9am with the 5km parkrun around Woodhouse Moor, Hyde Park which is free and open to all.

The parkrun will be followed by a 1.5km relay race for under 16’s and a 1.5km wheelchair race. There will also be the opportunity to try out events such as 60m sprint, standing long jump, foam javelins, mini-hurdles and a Speed, Agility and Quickness circuit. There will be a range of prizes available for the best performances in each event and for the overall best performer in different age group categories.

Coaches from Leeds City Athletics club, Leeds Metropolitan University & the University of Leeds will be on hand to instruct and oversee.

Participants can also benefit from free pre and post event massage from University of Leeds Sports Massage team and everyone is invited to bring picnics and brunch.

I dont think the 5K will be affected too much, but it looks like the park will be busy.

Anyway, I think another visit to Heaton Park is due - I notice the VM 40-44 age group record is now 18:23!!! Now, there's a target............:p:p

Or course food is to be enjoyed as well. But if you participate in any kind of sport, you need to give your body the right kind of nutrients to help you in that sport. There is no reason why you can't work these nutrients into meals that are also enjoyable!

Michael Phelps consumes an astonishing 12,000 calories a day during training and he's stick thin. Most of it is carbs and a lot of it is cr&p, but as long as he gets the nutrients and energy he needs...

I think you are talking about comfort eating, where people consume food as a "drug" i.e. the content feeling of fullness makes them feel good. Luckily for runners, we get the same feeling when endorphins are release during/after a good work out!

I know but doing a 5k in a park full of people to get in the way doesnt sound too fun ;)

Heaton park it is then :D
  • I never took up running to lose weight. I did it because i wanted to be able to run for miles, now I want to be able to run miles at a better than average pace ie: <25mins 5k. It just happens that I knew i would lose weight anyway and I also changed from eating 'man' food to eating healthy as well. I actually eat more now than I did before but im still losing weight. (eat more lose more). Essentially its this that means I will keep the running up even through the hard times. I am finding it difficult to find races/parkruns i can fit in round my job & other stuff so I am resolved to just train and hopefully do races next year. This thread keeps me motivated and interested its much more informative the a magazine and you get personal encouragement to boot!!

BT - you're not 'banging on' at all! It's really interesting, when I started out just walking - at 5'4" and 17 stone, changing to a primarily protein, veg and totally unprocessed diet was definitely the wya forward, in fact, the way forward for me was to 'give up dieting'. I ended up working a summer with a marine biologist, who runs alot and has also previous studied sports nutrition turned me around actually. It's all been very exciting! I'm sitting here eating a chicken breast with broccolli and cauliflower for my lunch - wondeirng if i could have had a couple of new potatoes considering I shall try another run this evening! hilarious!

But yes, I love the food I eat now, simply because I feel so well, and much stronger. But the running is exhausting, so if I need to change the fuel to move this forward - bring it on!

This thread is bloomin' marvellous! Thanks guys!

    All advise most gratefully received!
