Wondered if Alan M had heard of the granite I am about to order, Pretoria and whether he knows anything about it? The granite yard told me it was from South Africa, yet online I have read it is from India. Thanks
Oh and sorry to sound ignorant, but what is a CNC?

Have you read the get out clauses, ie, at your own risk, plus their charges neven if it breaks.
Seriously that is not an option.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

It's name certainly suggests it originates in SA, if you like it and it's what you're after, does it make any difference from where it's quarried?

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control.

They are large computer controlled machines that are used to machine manufacture material to a vey high degree of tollerance.

Here is a video showing the process, using scant (full slab) material.

Imagine trying to do this on site.

  • Thank you Alan, it makes no difference at all where it is from, I am just interested to know and thought you may have come across it.
That was an interesting video on CNC (Computer Numerical Control), thanks for posting the link.

    Thanks Alan.

Thats a very good video for anyone who hasn't seen this in operation. Humans simply cannot replicate the accuracy and consistency of CNC machines and some of the extra cost seen on worktops fabricated on CNC's goes towards the quality achieved from CNC machines.

I have never seen hand cut/polished stone achieve the quality that CNC's will.

Plus can you imagine anyone trying to carry out onsite cutting/fitting in wind and rain and in proximity to neighbours etc etc, it has to be a very 2nd choice option, ;), certainly smacks of it being done to a very tight budget supplier wise and asks the question of just how much infracstructure there is to their buisiness, and another good reason to go and visit.

On site fitting has it's place and is very viable.

However, in most cases the kitchen design determines if this is vaible or not.
  • Can you suggest some companies near High Wycombe in Bucks please? Im just in the process of fitting a kitchen but think I would have to get someone in to do postformed worktops - by the time I factor in this cost, granite doesnt seem like a bad option - maybe double the price, but 10 times the impact!

Have a quick look through this thread, there are a number firms recommended who will all be able to help.

If you just want a ballpark figure - a rough idea of costs without having to go through a full quote then take a look here:-
