Comping For Cash Article Discussion

  • I started comping when i was made redundant and was sat at home trying to find cheap and constructive things to do. I'm now back at work so i only have chance to enter a handful of competitions a week let alone a day so I only enter for things I would genuinely want.

It hasn't changed my life. I've had one decent win of some signed movie memorabilia but generally it has been small things although I am averaging just under one win a month. Winning is a bonus and not the reason for doing it!

    I won, I won, I won!
I would definately not do comps if you expect to win, as you don't often win big things or cash worth lots of money. I enter alot every day, last year I won alot, things always turned up without knowing I'd won and telephone calls here and there - it was fantastic, but year is totally different, not a scatch on last year. So definately no not start if expecting lots of money to suddenly start appearing (my opinion)

Comping is a hobby and there is no right to winning anything. I love coming in here, joining in the chat and entering as many comps as I fancy - winning is a bonus. Here it's about the community, not about the quick win. I love winning stuff, however small, it makes me feel good, but I don't expect it. Newbies are welcome but please join the forum and say thanks (using the thanks button). xx

I'm surprised it's just us compers who have replied to this, I thought there would be a few newbies checking it out:confused:

    I agree with everyone here.
Comping is a hobby and can't be a replacement for an income.
I work full time now, and therefore don't enter as many comps as I used to when I was a full time mum.
But I come on here for the chat as well, it's a great place that I'd be lost without.
But I do think whenever we are mentioned in the newsletter, we get waves of 'newbies', some of them hang with it and stay, like us who are here now, and others I think will give up after a few weeks because they haven't had the quick fix of prizes that they are expecting.

Lets hope all the 'newbies' have the common sense to read the comping guide!

well maybe they are put off by the neg attitude:rolleyes:, fair enough point out that you dont get easy wins but please remember we were all new to this once, how would you have felt as a newbie if you came to a forum that had people moaning at new people coming in?

to me the article was quite balanced, good tips and i wish there was something like that when i started comping, had to find my own way, the more you enter the more chances you have of winning:D

do comps that not many people enter such as captions, those that require that little extra effort and postal/texts as most people grudge paying to enter a comp, most of my wins have been through text comps:p

please read the comping guide as this has all the info you need

and main thing, have fun and enjoy comping

I was just going to say I think i would be scared to post if I was a newbie reading all this :o although everyones points are valid, If only winning all these lovely prizes was as easy & straightforward as it sounds  although what would be the fun in that? the odd prize turning up is lovely esp when you've been doing it long enough to know that you can't just expect it :)

ETA: In regards to the article, i think it's a tad misleading, but theres some valid points there for people interested in trying comping out
Thanks to everyone that posts :T:money:

It is also nice to daydream about what you would do with the big cash win / fab holiday/ new car etc...
I have been comping on and off for almost ten years and no huge wins, but I do like a nice little dream.....

I also disagree with the assertion at the start that by entering more competitions, you are more likely to win big. The odds of winning any competition is related to the number of enteries. It doesn't follow that the more you enter the bigger your prizes. Maybe you'll win more often, but not necessarily bigger, otherwise quite a few of us would have won the Daily Mail house by now.

I definitely agree with this, but I disagree with what you say that it isn't profitable. It's true that for most it isn't, but for some, who cannot work or are retired, then it IS profitable.

I have lost my job so have plenty of time to enter competitions; I do job hunting online every day as well as going out twice a week armed with CVs so I am being proactive and doing all I can to find work. But in the meantime I'd otherwise be sitting around doing nothing so I think comping is constructive. I don't have to buy any skincare or haircare for at least a year thanks to my wins for example.

I enter at least 100 comps a day, and have so far won almost £1400 of stuff this year but am still not as dedicated as I could be. Already this year I've seen more people posting here and entering comps here as well as the regular winners winning less so I think the credit crunch is biting us hard!!

We should remember too that if more people start entering then more comps may appear. Especially the local papers etc that we maybe don't know about now.

Although saying that I can never find new comps as they are already posted by the time I get home from work:rolleyes:
