No, its £1 to send a 'call-me' message to the unknown-to-you number they have listed on their database.

I found out about this service while watching Working Lunch.
Being Deaf the last thing I want is an operator calling me and leaving voicemail messages (I'm not able to switch off voicemail on my phone) or sending me text messages from people I'm unlikely to know, otherwise they'd be in my contact book and I'd be in theirs.
While it's good that they will not be including children in their database, have they thought this through?
What about the blind who don't have a phone that reads out their text messages and rely on a different ringtone for each friend?
I sure I don't want operators trying to call me asking to connect calls or have text messages asking me to call or text someone, by texting back they will have my number - there's no withheld number fuction on text messages like the hearing can use!
Out of the friends that I have seen today, only those with Orange are listed in the directory.
Does anyone know if it costs a quid to text E to their number (to remove myself) ?0 -
I actually think this is a really good idea and suprised it hasnt been done earlier. Dont really see what the fuss is about it, no one can get hold of your number without your permission so is not going to result in a barrage of phone calls as some people have said.
I've needed various peoples mobile numbers in the past which I didnt already have and trying to find someone else who had it was a nightmare and must have cost me far more than the £1 this charges0 -
Why couldn't they have texted us to let us know that they "had our details" and that if we wanted to be registered that we had to OPT-IN0

My biggest gripe is that its opt-out, not an opt in so by default youre in there.
So...just phoned em, to be told if i want to remove my number i must give them my address and name. Fair enough, so one false name and address later job done. May i suggest you folks do the same and tell your family and friends to do the same. Shouldnt be too difficult to cram their database with false names and address.Should be fun when they sell that database....

Anyone know how this is legal? I thought under the Data Protection Act information collected for one purpose couldn't be used for another. Wikipedia's plain English version of the act:
"Data may only be used for the specific purposes for which it was collected."
So if you've given your phone number to one company so they can call you if there is a problem with your order, how come they can sell it to another company to use in a phone book?
Isn't that a different use of your personal data?0 -
I am confused as to how my number appears in this database. I've only had the SIM for around 3 months & only about 8 individuals have the number, none of which are businesses. I have not agreed for it to be shared or used in any marketing technique.
I'm not concerned about receiving spam calls, just how they got the number in the 1st place. Did O2 sell it to them?0 -
Spokeswoman on BBC Breakfast just now admitting that they do not acknowledge the opt out, it can take FOUR WEEKS to remove your number & YOU MAY get calls from them.0

There is a Say No To 118 800 facebook group which tells you exactly how to opt out of this service.

What do others think of it? Invasion of privacy or useful resource?0 -
