Check your hearing and find out if you are within the normal range.

Take the RNID Hearing Check. Call 0844 800 3838 (calls from a BT landline cost up to 5p per minute. Other providers' charges may vary. Call set up charge may apply).

It can also be taken online:

Thanks Errata for the tip on Age Concern Life Book. What a great idea. I am a childless widow, no siblings only cousins and two God children. My God daughter has agreed to be my Executor if and when and told me to make sure everything was easy to find. What a brilliant solution with the Life Book.

Question for you all......how old is Old Age? I am 68 and quite fit and agile still, (few creaks) but I am nowhere near considering myself geriatric.

Another question. My will is stored in Somerset House for which I pay £25 a year. When my husband died I did not receive his will which was also stored there. I should have received it automatically. Have I been ripped off?

MW - you're welcome. I thought it was pretty useful for those who are on their own.
How old is old age ? Anybody older than me - or you :D.

No idea about the Somerset House thing, the only national storage system I was aware of was the Probate Office one for a one off fee of £15, and I'm sure the executor has to request the release. Or the willwriter if they're doing a new will.

Thanks again Errata. We chose a mirror will and an executor only comes into play when the remaining spouse dies. I now need to re-write my will as one executor has died and also a number of others named in the will.

Another strange question sprang to mind. My mother is nearly 97 and failing. My father died many years ago as did my only sibling. I have no children. When my mother dies I was wondering if I have a direct next of kin or would that title be spread among all my first cousins or the oldest child of each of my parents siblings children. Strange that I don't know this answer. Q. am I allowed to name my own choice of next of kin from a non relation? I am sure I could find out from the vast knowledge on the internet, but where?

If you make a will you don't have to name anyone as next of kin, just specify the names of who gets what.
If someone dies intestate the estate is distributed to the relatives according to their relationship http://www.graysons.co.uk/wills-intestacy.html

Thanks once again Errata - lots of information to digest. I used a will writing company - actually we were good friends - a franchise as mentioned on the link. I will ditch that now and use a Solicitor. The next of kin question was just a matter of interest. Have since watched Heir Hunters on the BBC and that has answered my questions. Thanks once again.

    Any particular reason?

My solicitor charges £80 + VAT for writing a will. I think it's worth the money.

Trying to think of the nickname I`ve heard for pensioners waiting for their free buses just before the 9-30am limit.
