Whenever I see these £1000+ prices banded about, I always feel like the person who just heard a joke that everyone else is laughing at, but I just don't get the punchline.

My manager has offered to lend me his brand new mac to see if he can 'convert' me. I feel like I'm about to join a cult!

take up his offer, and start using it.. go onto the apple website, and look at the switch videos and tutorials, and then you'll wonder why you put up with clunky windows with it's clunky file structure and dlls and antivirus etc.

you'll be converted in no time..

    spend £1000 on an apple it'll last you 5 - 7 years
spend £500 on a pc, it'll last you 2 before you have to put more ram in, re build it, buy new bits, add on new anti virus etc etc.
in 7 years you'll spend more on the upgrades etc.

take the next OS... windows upgrade at least £150 for a basic
OS X - about £40 for the FULL version that is all singing all dancing, so that's like the ULTIMATE package.. bargain really in comparison..

Will an upgrade to Snow Leopard allow an increase in RAM, or is that limited by the processor and mobo? (I'm running an iMac with 3GB RAM and 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo processor at present).

Leopard can already handle silly amounts of RAM. A Mac Pro can address 32 GB of RAM for instance. If 3 GB is your limit, then it's a limit imposed by the logic board, not the OS.

    This article should explain things.

Thanks, seems I am limited to 3GB, having the Merom Processor. However it might be worth going up to 4GB (i.e. swapping out the 1GB for 2GB chip) in order to gain the Dual Channel functionality, which it suggests gives a small speed increase, even though the last 0.7GB of RAMwill not be recognised.

Agreed - I've had my TiBook for coming up to 7 years now, and am just replacing it now, never had to reinstall OS again or anything like that, and it was running just fine considering its age..

I got the unibody macbook in march. What are my chances of trying to get the macbook pro from apple plus cash on top of my old macbook?

    Is it worth an upgrade?

You want Apple to swap your MacBook for a MacBook Pro and give you money?

The new 13 inch MacBook Pro is certainly a better computer. It has FireWire, a better display, an SD card slot, and longer battery life. The main difference for me is the FireWire; if you don't use it, then you probably shouldn't be too bothered about upgrading from a recent unibody MacBook.

If you ever consider buying more gear from Apple, keeping an eye on this page is generally a good idea.

    Thats how I read it:rotfl:.

I waited last year for the Alu Macbooks to come out, only to find out they had removed the Firewire and increased the price by £150 over the white Macbook.

As I need a Firewire connection I ended up getting the White Macbook.

I think the Macbook (Pro) they released yesterday is a much better proposition and worth the upgrade over the White Macbook whereas before I didn't.

I am weighing up whether to sell my white one to get the new unibody now.

I'm just a little bit gutted to know they've upgraded the spec. I bought a unibody macbook 4 weeks ago with my student discount. Only went for the 2GHz as just didn't have enough money for the 2.4GHz. Plus I really really wanted that illuminated keyboard but finances just couldn't be stretched . Now I find out I could have had a faster processor and a light up keyboard for about £20 less grrr.

Anyway I still LOVE my Mac!!

Oh and I missed out on the IPod Touch rebate by about 7days!

As you benefit from Student Discount (I'm assuming something around 14%), Why not sell your Macbook on Ebay?

As it is only 4 weeks old, you should be able to get at least what you paid for it or maybe even a bit more after taking out all costs.

Then use the cash to get the New Macbook Pro with your student discount with the Ipod Touch on rebate.

You could then sell the Ipod touch if you want.

So you basically get a Brand New Macbook Pro with the features you wanted and even pocket some cash on top from what you have currently, by selling the Ipod Touch.;)

Thats what I would do anyway.:D

Oh, you can also get a printer on rebate, sell that to:D.
