how does it stack against chrome 3?

i know it was faster than chrome 2 but not sure about this

chrome 3 does seem faster still for me

Well, Safari seems faster on my Mac, but Chrome is only available as a developer release for the Mac, so it might not be a fair comparision.

Using this Javascript benchmark test, I get the following for Safari 4:

    20090608-qr22animjhec2gruwqg6u4k59f.jpg

    (smaller numbers are better)

    for Google Chrome:

    20090608-g7kkmqdbgkc47epghrhhijpsis.jpg

    and for Firefox:

    20090608-emr2u6p755qh2gqek4xnn7dyga.jpg

Whichever way you look at it, Safari is certainly no slouch in the speed department. It's also the only one of the above browsers that passes the Acid3 Test.

So this side of the pond that will be about £70 eh Marty?

lol...probably. I'd love to know what exchange rate Apple uses!
Any idea of the date for UK release?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same day as the US release, or a day or two behind at most.

hmm i asked because ive used safari 4 all day now and only upgraded chrome 3 a few hours ago and ive notice a significant speed increase

i cant pick between the two on load times tbh

    both seem identical

i do like safari's new look but i think chrome save time by having the omno bar and i think in reality it save time (if you think that browser speed differences are so minute now, moving your cursor less of a distance makes a huge impact)

so i think that clinches it for me

i shall keep using them though

oh and by the way chrome 3 passes the acid3 test perfectly too

    i checked several times myself

it also gets 171 on the test you did

like i said so minute that the omnibar clinches it for me
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Not on Pay & Go it isn't. Calling plans for the iPhone in the US start at $69.99 a month, with a 2 year contract.

Well good on your for trying them both out. The developer release of Chrome on the Mac doesn't pass the Acid3 Test yet, so I assume the Windows version is different.

odd how this is out when chrome 1 was released not even a year ago and chrome 2 like a month ago?

Whenever I see these £1000+ prices banded about, I always feel like the person who just heard a joke that everyone else is laughing at, but I just don't get the punchline.

My manager has offered to lend me his brand new mac to see if he can 'convert' me. I feel like I'm about to join a cult!

Is it worth upgrading from the 2.26Ghz to the 2.53Ghz when buying initially if I was going to upgrade the memory to 4Gb and the HDD to 250Gb anyway?

Middlers - problem with the processor is that you can't upgrade it later, it's soldered to the board. It's an expensive upgrade for the HDD and RAM, but you'll be stuck with the processor. Plus the HDD will be harder to replace now with the non removable battery.

I guess it depends what you're doing with it. Some applications such as video encoding are very CPU intensive.

A 13 inch 2.26 GHz MacBook Pro with a 250 GB HDD is £939. 4 GB of RAM from Crucial is £45.99 (almost half the price it is from Apple), bringing the total to £984.99. The 2.53 GHz model from Apple is £1,149.

So that faster processor is costing you an extra £164. If I had the money burning a hole in my pocket, I wouldn't bother with the faster processor. I'd bump the HDD to 320 or 500 GB instead. You'll run out of HDD space long before a 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo can't handle it any more.
