government benefits for childless couples

Are all children whose parents claim benefits going to grow up to be a drain on society??
not all but being in my current job it appears that 50% (conservative est) of claimants of tax credits are young single mums/dads on Income support or JSA who appear to have no notion/incentive to get employment as either the wage is too low or childcare costs are to high.
eventually, monkey see monkey do, " my mum/dad does'nt work and gets money for doing nothing, i'll do the same"
I admit it is a vicious circle sometimes... on benefits-encouraged to get a job-get a job-loss out on money-pack in job-on beneifts-encouraged to get a job... but where do we stop in the funding for this?
it appears i am slogging my guts out for nothing and yes i could be out of a job tomorrow or get diagnosed with cancer or get hit by a bus but i am a worker and if any of these things happened i would return to work asap. i am proud of the fact that my parents were hard workers too and instilled such good moral values in me.
before i started this line of work i thought the welfare system was fantastic and helped everyone to some extent no matter what thier circumstances...now i know differently.fatblokexl:EasterBun:0 -
Its exactly that sort of attitude that helps perpetuate this cycle!! There are plenty of employers who wont employ youngsters who come from certain areas (poor/council/rough).
My mum was a single parent (widowed and left with 5 kids to bring up on a rough council estate) and both myself and my sister had babies when we were very young and unmarried - there were lots of reasons for that which I won't go into. My point is, I had 4 children and none of them have ever been in trouble or claimed benefits. Its attitudes such as yours which make people think there's no point even trying cos you'll always be scum if you have a bad start. Education's the key but even then if you're on a scummy estate it's not likely your education will be up to much - believe me I know!!~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0 -
fatbloke has started a silly thread..If he wants to air his views go to a chat forum or a stress counciller, gotta go one of my 4 kids needs the computor0

perhaps if he didnt have 2 car loans and a bank loan, he would be able to manage and have money over at the end of the month.

Looks like somebody has been working in Tax Credits for far too long! They havent quiet got children out of poverty, they government havent quiet met the target although it has helped many people, myself included.
The number of children moved out of poverty so far is approx 900,000. The govt target was 1,000,000 by the end of this Tax Year.....or something like that
The old adage of 'You cant please all the people all of the time' springs to mind here.
Some people will always expect and demand to receive benefits with no remorse or thought going into their actions (dropping sproggs left, right & centre), but the majority of people who receive these benefits genuinely require them to survive.....which is exactlywhy they are there. You cannot tarnish everybody with the same brush.0 -
I was mealy stating what I heard on TV regarding poverty.0

I am on benefits at the moment due to the fact I gave up my career to have children with my husband, who after 11 yrs of marriage decided that he couldn't keep his bits in his pants and started an affair with a 18yr old. I moved from the NW of England to the NE to be with him when I was 17 and I supported him through university so he could get a degree in IT and a well paid job which was supposed to ensure financial security for me and the kids in years to come. I don't have family support, child care is at a premium where I live and is totally inaccessible to anyone on minimum wage, which is what any job I am qualified for would pay due to the circumstances I've described. I can't even find reliable childcare so I can go back to college to get qualifications to avoid the minimum wage scenario. I've tried...twice in the last 2 years.
My daughter is 13 and she wants to be a cardiac surgeon. Not just a doctor but a surgeon and even at this age is already choosing the right classes in school to help her reach that goal. I support her 110%, I do everything I can to encourage her to aim high and the last thing I want for her is to end up in my position in the future.
So no monkey see monkey do here...........nor anyone else I know's case.
You really do have such a warped view of single parents

i think that when you know of a few cases who are taking p*** and get more than you for doing a lot less or b*gger all it really clouds your judgement and makes you cynical i know of 3 cases who i know who could do more and dont yet my otherhalf and me slog our guts out sometimes not seeiing each other from one week to the next(with 4 kids to support)and just manage to keep our heads above water and for me its the knowledge of those 3 cases make me feel really angry but then you have to think there is a lot of genuine cases out there but you always remember the worst cases which could if you let it make you feel very bitter, but then the results of the poll speak for themselves(and all 3 cases that i know of all include some sort of disability or incapacity benefit and i have seen thing at first hand)0

I know of one couple who have claimed to live apart and share custody of their 5 kids so they can each claim the appropriate benefits/credits even though they live in the same home and the 5th child was conceived during this supposed separation.
But as you say that doesn't mean the system only works for scammers. I'm sure that in the bigger scheme of things the majority of people getting help are genuine honest people who really need the help they are receiving.0 -
Well i am a 21 year old single mum on benefits, not by choice, my babys father left me when i was pregnant, and have not seen him since, i have a beutiful 22 month old little boy.
i dont get much but i get by on what i do get and i am very grateful for it too. i manage to run a car. (my mum paid my insurance), take my little boy places i have a nice home (on a council estate) and he is fed and clothed well, you dont need lots of money to have fun with kids. so the thought of you moaning that you cant survive on 2 wages and you want benefits makes me laugh. surely you dont really need it afterall, it would be drainingn the government of more money.
you may have chosen to not have children, but for some people the urege to be a mother is very stong, and everyone has the right to it, i mean, our children are the future!
And as for going back to work, my little boy is my world and i dont want to miss a moment, so the thought of leaving him in a nuresery while i go to work does not go well with me, (tried it and hated leaving him) but as soon as he is in school, i will definately be going back to work.
Not everyone is the same.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0
