another lucky winner for a seasons holiday.................but fortunately have a good friend who directed me to the MSe site and I can see that others were offered a prize of a free years membership!
Will not be booking any holidays any time soon.0 -
I keep getting natwest emails, i know they are not comp things, but i think all the email companies are letting more spam though. There wasa ruling about they had to stop it. But, recently i've had lots, where as last year, i got not at all. so i wonder whats happened *puzzled*. best thing is, if you havent entered a comp to win a `x` then you can't have won one!_Jen_0

Hi all
I'm new here, just found this board through google.
I'm hoping somebody can offer some advice. My elderly Father-in-law has been giving money to people in order to "win" competitions. I don't know many details, but i'm sure it's a scam. These people write to him, he gets several letters asking for money everyday. He told us yesterday he's given somebody £500. These people say they are from canada and come to his house as well as contacting him by post.
I am very concerned about the situation, especially given that FIL is normally VERY prudent with his money, to put it politley!
also, one of the "prizes" was "stolen" by a lady with a very similar name to FIL. She now regularly receives mail at FIL's home.
We live about 100 miles away from FIL, so at the moment don't know any more details. He also gets visited by dodgy tradesmen about once a week, but asks for help to deal with these. I'm really concerned about how these conmen are getting FIL's money. FIL doesn't want to hear it from us that he is being conned. I don't know what to do.
Please can anybody offer any help, advice or even just a bit more info about these conmen.
Thank you!0 -
Hi Julie
Welcome to the forum..you will get loads of advice from the great people here.
First you need to try and stop your FIL from sending any money.
Next does he have a helpful neighbour nearby that could keep an eye if anyone comes round regarding money etc.
Also try Age Concern (there should be a group local to him) ...explain your concerns and ask if they could see him regarding this matter.
Also if money is being taken from him...please inform the police..these people who pray on the vunerable are ruthless and will not stop unless action is taken...
All the best
BrexThanks to all comp posters:ADo not take life too seriously; you will never get out of it alive0 -
Thanks for that. i'll give age concern a try. I think the hardest part is going to be getting FIL to admit he's being conned. I'll keep you posted with my progress, and in the meantime, I'd love to hear from anybody who has anything to say on the subject!0

Julie,
Welcome to the forum. I'm very sorry to hear about the situation with your FIL. From what you've described it sounds like plain fraud to me.
This kind of fraud is not unusual (search on Watchdog, MSE or google for scams, the 'competition wins' is just one variant) but if there are people turning up on your FIL doorstep, allegedly from Canada, then I'm sure the Police will be interested once you've explained it to them and shown them the multiple daily letters etc. Good luck, let us know how it turns out. From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings
