iPhone in the UK - Sums and play?

Can't understand why people would pay so much for an iPhone.... yes they are very nice phones, so small and sleek yet super functional....
But I thought there was a credit crunch on...... I would love an iPhone but never while they are so expensive - I couldn't justify £30 a month over 12 months with a free phone, nevermind paying for the phone as well, longer contracts and over £30 a month.
Not knocking anyone who does though.... everyone to their own.0 -

Ok, ill be getting a new IPhone 3GS. 32G - price be dam**d - I just want one!
Have anyone worked out the cheapest way to get one of these on contract / PAYG?
I presume O2 are still allowing you to reduce the contract to a lower monthly charge after 3 months ( can anyone confirm this?)
If noone has done this already - I may be sitting down with a spreadsheet tonight working it all out.0 -

Thing is.. we have to be sensible...
in 12 months time, there will be another new iPhone out, so my thought is to order a PAYG 32gb iPhone 3G S, and in 6 months time, i'm contract free. So i'll change my contract to a cheaper simplicity contract, which is 30 days.
Then when the new iPhone 4 comes out (super secret codename that is!!!!
) I'll be contract free, and can just upgrade to the newest one..
then in 12 months time after that, PAYG and the vicious circle continues..

But how much would you end up paying over say a course of 12 months, and how does that compare to just getting one on contract?
Is this the cheapest route?0 -
Any O2 staff here know if there's any plans to increase the text allowance? 500 texts is pretty poor.0

I'm confused about all the news that existing iPhone customers will have to buy out their contracts and take out new ones. So you hand over £35 x (number of months left) not to use the free minutes and texts.
I would hand my old iPhone to Mrs V, continue the contract and let her yak on he free minutes.
Or am I missing something here?The man without a signature.0 -
You would buy out your contract, so you would pay the line rental for the remaining number of months left and then you'd be able to upgrade to the new 3GS. Your wife wouldn't be able to use the account as you've bought it out early.
You can reduce it after 9 months to the lowest tariff which is £30 per month.0
