hum ok well i took the dongle out tried a webpage and it said ie cannot display the webpage i tried this site and got the same message.

You have to be within reach of a wireless network to connect, and have the wireless enabled (and know the encryption key if it's secured as it should be). You can't just connect by opening your browser.
Yes, wi-fi and wireless are the same thing.
