OK i'm starting to understand now thx so much

it looks like the 3 deal is the 1 i need, what about the modem tho because o2 charge £58,00 where as 3 there's no mention how much it is/

You only pay 02 for the modem if you take the 30 days contract, if you take a 12 month or longer contract it's free.
But as advised earlier, the excess data charges over 3Gb are 19.6p per MB (not per GB).
But this is a contract deal and will require a credit check-if you are convinced you will not pass that, why are you looking at contract phones?
Sorry, but I'm still confused about what you actually want to do with mobile broadband-all your earlier posts said you needed to surf 10 hours a night. Now you're saying you don't and it's 'just a backup'. If it is just a backup, you are crazy paying £15 a month (that's assuming you can get a contract dongle). Why don't you just get a PAYG dongle and use that when you need to?
You seem fixated with getting a 'free' dongle without regard to the ongoing charges.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

i've set it up (I think) but i have a couple of questions please?

there's a usb cable with it, what's the usb cable for?

    and is the laptop secure?

Good choice because it is one of the only dongles that comes unlocked and therefore other network operators SIM's can be used by simply creating a new connection profiles, although it's possible to get them cheaper.

i've set it up (I think) but i have a couple of questions please?

Does it work OK? Good speed?

there's a usb cable with it, what's the usb cable for?

To protect the dongle/USB socket from damage and to allow it to be positioned in an optimal position for reception.

    and is the laptop secure?

You still need anti-virus, firewall etc. but the cellular link is quite secure.

not really sure what that means, do you mean i can buy another mobile bb sim from anywhere and just set it up like i have with 02?

if so, are there cheaper payg mobile bb than o2, the way i understand it, they all seem to charge £15.00 for 3 gb.

it seems to be OK, i tried o/s and got online ok

Sorry, but my computer knowledge is zero, which means the above means nothing(no offence) i'm ok with plug in and go.

Ive had my AOL broadband cut off (long story) so currently using free 3 sim via a o2 dongle which costs £15 and comes already unlocked

I paid £15 for 3gb which lasts a month, i have since found out that you can buy £5 "3" top up and then covert it do daily internet acccess for 50p, £2.50 weekly or £5 monthly unlimited usage through your "3" account, and the balance stays there untill its used up.

I think this is the cheapest way to get mobile broadband ??

Yes any other mobile operator SIM's could be used and obviously they all charge different rates for data use just like they do for voice calls. Some expire after one month and others charge for a days or a weeks use - depends on your needs.

if so, are there cheaper payg mobile bb than o2, the way i understand it, they all seem to charge £15.00 for 3 gb.

As posted by deanos, there are different ways to connect using mobile SIM's e.g. a T-Mobile SIM charges £1 max per day, Virgin charge £0.30 per day for up to 25MB of usage etc. etc. It depends if it's just to use e-mail or surfing, which obviously uses more data.

Sorry, but my computer knowledge is zero, which means the above means nothing(no offence) i'm ok with plug in and go.

Any USB dongle is easily damaged while plugged into the side or the back of a laptop, so the cable can prevent damage to the dongle and the USB socket if knocked by accident. The cable also allows the dongle to be positioned to get best reception in areas of low signal strength.

    i use kerspasky internet suite

    Should be fine then.

You could have bought the same item directly from O2 and used Quidco for cashback. The cashback was worth around £55.

i've set it up (I think) but i have a couple of questions please?

O2's service is slow compared with 3. It may still be worthwhile getting a free 3 Mobile sim to use with this dongle. This particular modem is already unlocked - you just need to either download Huawei Mobile Partner or change the network connection settings to use another provider's sim card.

Hi I bought the same dongle as in the link above today. I didnt realise but the difference between the PAYG dongle and the 30day rolling contract dongle (£30 and £58 respectively) is that the contract one is 7.6Mbps and the PAYG is 3.6Mbps, you can purchase the PAYG one for £58 if you wish.

I decided on the cheaper one due to the infrequent use and just topped it up with £2 and so far I must say im impressed. I can terminal server on to the servers at work and do remote support with virtually no lag at all
