    Hi all..

Good news today.. The consultant thinks Rhys is over the worst of his immediate problems, and now it's a wait-and-see job to find out what the long term consequences are going to be of the damage that's been caused.

They've taken another line out of his arm (the one they take blood from, so any blood tests he needs now will be the heel prik type - not nice, but less risky than having a permanent line in) and if he can tolerate bigger feeds (12ml instead of the 9ml hourly he's on now) then they can take the final fluid line out and he'll be on breastmilk only! :j He's not being so sick now so the reflux meds and milk thickener seem to be working and he's nearly finished his antibiotics so that should ease his tummy problems even further. They need him to not be so sick as any meds he needs will be mixed with his milk and they obviously want him to keep the full dose in.

Also, as he's not "critical" any more, they might move him into the next room, which is a bit nicer as it has less machines in the background, just the ones he needs :D

We've been asked if Rhys can be filmed by the Physio Dept for research into how he moves now compared to how he will move when he's 2yo. Both for his good and for the good of future babies and parents to give them some idea of what their future might hold. Going to send the consent forms back later today :)

In very sad news, the other little baby in the same room as Rhys passed away this morning so everyone is very subdued at the moment :(

On the visitor front, OH's mum has been in already and my mum is due shortly. Colleague who came in last night has now told the boss she's been in and the boss is getting stroppy that she didn't get to come too - not my fault she lives in 45mins away! Got to go for the touchy-feely approach now and txt her to invite her to come in this week. She knows she can come anytime but think I need to pander to her a bit for the sake of other colleagues! ;) I'm supposed to be able to forget office politics whilst I'm on mat leave, aren't I?

Hope everyone else is okay.. Who wants labour vibes? :)

Elle that is great news about Rhys!!!

Sorry for his little neighbour though.

I just fell asleep for 5 mins and I'm pondering setting the alarm on my phone and having a snooze, but then if I do that I will wake up my BP will be up and my head will be hurting. But I'm all relaxed and sleepy.

I'm too scared to tell her. WHat if they won;t let me have a homebirth? What if they make me take drugs that might harm the baby? I can;t tell her. Normally I would get help but I just am too scared in case they take the baby away. I was taken away for a few weeks when I was little and it ruined my relationship with my family even though I don;t have actual memories of it. I can;t do that to my baby.

Neither of those things are likely to happen! The rates of PND or PNI are very very high - about 1 in 4 women suffer to some degree, and the medical professionals are very up on what to do about it. I know loads of women who suffered very badly (and am one myself) and in no case was it even suggested that the baby be taken away. Drugs were chosen to ensure they didn't harm the baby. The only circumstances where taking baby away might be considered seriously afaik is in the case of a single parent unable to care for the baby with no other family support, or where the baby had actually come to some harm.

If it helps skintchick, I actually spent 6 months in hospital with PND after my second child was born, and I had 12 sessions of ECT (electro-convulsive therapy) as well as copious quantities of all kinds of drugs. My OH and my family between them looked after my children who were 10 months and 23 months at the beginning of the hospital stay, and it was never suggested for a moment that anything else should happen, nor were there any concerns (other than to make sure I had enough support at home from professionals) about the children being left at home when I came out of hospital. I had the most severe form of PNI - post partum psychosis - which only affects a tiny percentage of women, and was seriously bonkers for a while!

I only took anti d's when breastfeeding, as didn't develop any illness before the birth, but I have another friend with a history of depression who is on anti d's permanently, and she took them during both her pregnancies on medical advice and babies are both absolutely fine, and mum has stayed well.

I am gutted that I will probably be on meds after a few weeks so will not be able to breast feed for very long, but it is more important for me to be at home with baby.

sorry that turned into a long post.:o

I saw health visitor today & explained some of what has been going on here. I'm having weekly home visits (not usual for a 4th timer) and will review in a few weeks. She suspects my past history of pnd will mean I'm likely to get it this time with the added stress I've had recently and is keen to ensure I have lots of support from early on. If I do she would like me to consider meds.

/////the point of this post is to say that there are meds for pnd now which you can take when b/feeding - several to choose from - so meds do not necessarily mean giving up b/f

    (hugs)
