Engagement ring... for £700?!

I was always told an engagement ring should be between 1 and 3 months salary, which is what we went for. It's nice to think we have a ring to pass down to daughters/in law.
However, I understood that one of the points of an eternity ring was to get another (larger??) ring at a point in time when there was more money available as so many couples are broke to start with.
I know I have recently been informed about the eternity ring thing , any more surprise I need to be aware of?
Luckily I have just landed a lucrative contract so that will cover this, plus all the costs of the wedding and honeymoon.0 -

£700???
I would of been very cross with my OH if he spent that amount on a ring! Mine cost £100 and that seemed an awful lot to us:o
The price of love nowadays:rolleyes:BLOWINGBUBBLES:kisses2: SMARTIE120 -
I bought my wedding ring from www.hallmarkjewellery.com, their service was excellent - I didn't like the original design OH wanted, so we were able to change without issue. See something in the shops that you like and price up on there to compare. They charge depending on size, type of material - gold/platinum and also on size/quality of stone.
I actually got my engagement ring in Las Vegas when the exchange rate was excellent, so bearing that in mind, I paid about £270 for it!Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

My ring cost OH around £750 and it was half price at the time, he shopped around and found the perfect ring, I'd have gone mad at him if he'd have spent the whole £1,500 on it (especially since we were saving to move at the time) but his budget was only ever going to be around £750 and it was money he had been saving up since the month after we had gotten together so it never affected our joint savings/money (expalins why he was always skint!) and he was very lucky that he found it for such a good price...white gold with 22 diamonds in it:D
At the end of the day the cost doesnt matter its whether your OH likes it, If your worried that you'll make the wrong choice then i'd go with what everyone else is saying and let her choose her own.

My ring is from Dejoria as you mentioned you'd had a look at. My OH spent just over £800 on it and its lovely. We picked it together and I wouldn't change it. It's valuation is almost double that too. I'd recommend the site. (no i'm not connected to it!!)♥ Mummy to a gorgeous little boy born 11/01/09 ♥0

my Oh spent as much as he could afford on a ring - about £3k - and chose very carefully. I'm glad he went for something special because it is my pride and joy - always on show - and I'll be wearing it for the rest of my life. It is platinum with a .8diamond and pink sapphires either side. it is my most loved possession as he took the time to design something different that was very me- rather than walking into the local h samuel or whatever and going for the typical engagement ring.
Of course, you can spend a lot less and still have something special. I saw a beautiful ring with small diamonds set in a daisy shape for £300 which i would have adored as that is very me. Had money been a factor I would also have liked a pink saphire as the main stone with smaller diamonds either side which would have been a much cheaper option. If she has a favourite gemstone this is a nice option if she values size/showiness. Some people however, would be happier with a tiny diamond then a large somethng else. You (and possibly a best friend?) know her best.
Mine was from cool diamonds which make bespoke rings for all budgets and service wise come highly recommended. I'm sure you could find something on their website within budget and suitable for your fiance.
Personally, I feel a man should spend as much as he can afford and put alot of effort into the choosing. I dont agree with choosing together. my ring means so much more to me for the fact that my OH chose it himself.MANAGED TO CLEAR A 3K OVERDRAFT IN ONE FRUGAL, SUPER CHARGED MONEY EARNING MONTH!:j

just to add - just had another look on the cool diamonds website and it really is fab. You can alter style, metal, stone size cut and clarity to create something personal and within budget. It's really easy and the diamonds are at around 40% off retail value. hth
for example - the alisa ring is platinum and 0.3 carat good quality diamond at £545. 0.4 carats is £770. white gold is slightly cheaper but if she prefers white metal I'd recommend platinum as it doesnt 'yellow' and need replating.MANAGED TO CLEAR A 3K OVERDRAFT IN ONE FRUGAL, SUPER CHARGED MONEY EARNING MONTH!:j

Hi
Me and DH brought my ring 5 years ago from a local jewellers and it cost £600. I love it as we also used rest of the money to pay off debt and I didnt want something so expensive when we were so skint. Its a small oblong diamond in a thin gold band. As I say I love it. Also save money by getting 9ct gold with a nicer diamond as TBH you cant tell the difference and 9ct is much harder wearing. AND look for wholesale jewellers as they do great deal but often dont advertise but are happy to sell to the public. Know a couple in belfast but guess no good unless you libe in NI
