My OH bought me the most beautiful and unusual engagement ring. It cost £600, (half price in sale) is 18carat white gold with 122 small diamonds totalling 1 carat diamond. I get asked about it at least once a day and the best thing about it is that I know it will be a family heirloom that will be passed down through our children, grandchildren etc for many, many years.0

Hi,
My ring (Sapphire, diamond and gold) cost £145 from a local independant jeweller.
We had agreed to get get engaged on my 21st birthday, so bought it prior to the day but was only allowed to look at it!
Not that romantic but DH isn't like that plus doesn't have a clue about my taste.
I got diamonds for our 5th wedding anniversay - a platinum and diamond eternity ring.
My wedding ring cost £120, my choice. DH's cost £50, he went for white gold as yellow doesn't suit him. So we don't have matching rings.

My engagement ring cos £30 in 2003 its white gold with a fake diomond (diamonette or something) I did want the silver one that was in the sale for £8 but OH wouldnt let me have it lol. I think £500 is a heck of a lot for a ring I wouldn't wear it incase I lost it >.<0

I got engaged to my wife in 2004, and I paid about £900 for the engagement ring from Goldsmiths which was the most that I could possibly afford to be honest.
The point I think is this. Like me, you're romantic at heart and want the best for your girl. True, this doesn't necessarily come down to ££££, but it's all about doing what you feel appropriate.
We chose our wedding rings together, as we have virtually identical rings (I have the male equivalent of hers). This being the case, this is your one chance to choose that special something that YOU believe will be fitting to stay on her hand every second of every day for the rest of her life.
It's about the ring. If you see one that melts your heart, and you think SHE will adore, thn go for it - even if it costs less than your target price.0 -
It's far more romantic to propose somewhere special with a memorable ring, than it is to spend money you don't have postponing your debt free date.
I am not allowed to wear rings at work, so for those who say it's on display every day, that's not true for everyone.
A big flashy ring is also a target for muggers - would you want your future fiance to be more at risk because of an expensive ring?

If she asks, then admit it's not the real thing and let her know it was the most romantic way without breaking the bank.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

My engagement ring cost £1,200 from the Jewellery Quarter (insurance valuation over £2,000 five years ago). However, had OH got his act together a little sooner I would have been very happy with one I saw in a local jewellers for about a quarter of that.
However, we were not in debt, he was happy to spend the money and he said at the time I would never get any other jewellery from him - and I haven't, apart from my wedding ring (£170)
All the best to you both

No idea if you are near Birmingham but try the Jewellery Quarter.
My engagement ring cost £80 if memory serves and was an Argos one. Still wouldn't change it for the world.
My wedding ring is plain 18ct gold and cost £60 from Jewellery Quarter. I think the most expensive one I had was £95 and it's my eternity ring (also from Jewellery Quarter).
I wouldn't want anyone spending large sums of money on stuff like that. I'd rather have a great honeymoon and memories to go with it than a big sparkly ring.
My friend was trying to get house insurance to cover for her jewellery and her husbands watch etc for when they are out and about. She needed circa £15,000 worth of cover  I'd be bricking it too much to go out wearing stuff that expensiveI have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

Thanks to everyone for their comments. You're right, £700 is a lot of money and it's kind of reassuring to hear people on here say so because when I read "advice" elsewhere, it's all the usual "1 or 2 monthly wage" nonsense.
I'm going to aim for around £500. There are a few sites mentioned in this thread with something like my girlfriend would like. I'd put the other £250 against debt - the £500 won't add to debt, it will come straight off the debit card and it seems like I can buy something rather nice for that.
I know it's about the gesture and not just jewellery - I think £500 is a nice compromise. We did talk about it a year ago but we were in too much debt then to go any further. I'd like to surprise her this time (I know she will say yes!) so now I have to figure out how to find out her ring size without her knowing!!0 -

does she have any rings already that she wears on her ring finger?
Would she notice if they were missing - a guy I know knew his fiance's ring size because she had got a 5 pence piece stuff in her ring by mistake (as previously mentioned we have to take our rings off for work, it must have been in her pocket.
Try the 5p trick and see, or mark a carrot with the size.;) That's what ring guages in jewellers look like - a bit more uniform, but like a big metal carrot.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
