Does she like any particular kind of stone, she might not even like diamonds
Have you asked her. this is a big thing and is going to be on show for a long time so its got to be something that she absolulty adores.

My own particular preference is Opals, single with nothign at the sides, 9ct or 18ct gold.

go for it. and i hope she says yes.

Just a word of warning, while Opals are lovely, they are believed to be unlucky and shouldn't be given as an engagement ring so you may want to avoid them unless you are confident OH won't mind.

The reason they are considered unlucky is that they do have a tendancy to crack, split and chip and fall out of their settings. While diamonds are very hard wearing opals are very fragile.

I have some opal jewellery and so does my mum, we are both pretty areful with our jewellery an have a decent amount of "good stuff" and both have had problems with opal rings.

I'd suggest looking at a sapphire, garnet, tourmaline, peridot, topaz, aquamarine, amathyst, citrine, or similar.

Please don't spend money you can't afford....my engagement ring was oringally from a market and cost around £20, then we bought another for £120 when we could afford it. Later on I got an £800 "proper" ring. I could have easily worn none at all and been perfectly happy. If you want to get married spedning huge amounts on the ring shouldn't matter. talk to yur GF and ask her what she wants. If she insists on a massive expensive ring i wuld be questioning that.

Personally i wouldnt want an expensive ring. Id be too scared of damaging/losing it! Ideally i think somewhere between £100 and £200 would be plenty for me, but id be fine if it was much cheaper as long as i loved it. (that would be the most important thing to me.)

The whole 1 or 3 monts salary thing is madness in my eyes!

Also id want to pick it myself-as it would be wearing it and although my OH knows me very well, id still want to choose it.
