Any woman in love would be delighted with just the proposal. No need for grand gestures, you can do that when you're debt free. That would be the very best engagement present I could think of. It's all about the love: the ring is just advertising

    my ring cost about £50.00

cheapskate you all may think, i may be divorced now, but tbh there is no need to spend a fortune on a ring, doesn't mean you love them any less, a ring is a token, to be given an engagement ring would be enough, if anyone feels that money is the issue is living in a materialistic world
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

It's not how much it costs that matters, but that she really loves you (firstly) & it as she'll be wearing it forever (hopefully).~ I have a collection of engagement rings I never much liked (& tried to give back when we split up). I'm sure it's just coincidence, but the ring I had a choice about finally resulted in marriage & it makes me smile every time I catch sight of it. My oh proposed with a pretty but inexpensive dress ring which I still wear on my other hand sometimes.
She may not want a diamond, many of my friends have chosen other stones. Also many people prefer platinum, white gold or even silver now rather than yellow gold. One of my friends has a cz dress ring that everyone assumes is a diamond, it cost about £25, if it were a diamond it would have cost well over £1000.
There is an online company called bluenile that will make something up with your choice of diamond from the flawless to the much cheaper. I do second the local jeweller option though. I had mine made locally to my design, they let my oh pay it off over a few months which was useful with all the wedding expenses at the time. Or take yourself off to Hatton Gdn in London, or the jewellery quarter in Brum, you'll get more for your money plus can have a fun day out choosing. I'd avoid any of the big name stores, especially Goldsmiths as they're very expensive-unless you're doing as the previous poster is & using Tesco vouchers.

Qhen mw and hubby got engaged i asked him not to get any diamonds as i didnt believe in wasting the little money we had at the time. So he got me a very nice silver one with a fake. I was very pleased and no one guessed it was a fake! This year in our 5th year of marriage i got my diamonds in the form of an eternity ring on sale for under £200, maybe not every womans dream but i have been very happy with this.

My engagement ring cost nothing! It was my MIL's and she gave it to my OH to give to me, I think she was desperate to get rid of him!

I keep meaning to get the ring dated because my FIL bought it back in the 1940's from an antique shop so I think it's quite old.

When I was engaged 15 years ago my ring cost £750, and its most recent valuation for insurance purposes was £2000. It's antique (Victorian) 18ct gold, set with 7 emeralds and 4 diamonds.

I know a lot of people are saying it's not the cost that matters, and whilst this is true, if the OP can afford, and is happy to spend £700 (still a very decent amount of money), then why not? He will have a very happy fianc!e with a very pretty sparkly left hand!

Its not about the cost of the ring :) its about your love!

My engagement ring cost £250 and I love it, I did pick it myself, but I love it, some of the more expensive ones just looked naff to me.

And I couldnt really justify OH spending more than that on a ring (I am not a material girl lol)

Because you dont need to spend money to have a nice ring? Just becasue he has £700 to spend on a ring doesnt mean to say he should go buy one for that price just cos he can?

If he sees one he loves more for £450 then he should go for that one!

I don't think £700 is an insignificant amount to pay for a ring. I'm sure you could get a decent one for a lot less too.

As someone has already said, if you feel really strongly you could always buy her an eternity ring at a later date.
