Its so hard in todays litigious society to accept some things are just bad luck, but I am of the opinion they are. I'm surprised, as a matter of prevention, the supermarket didn't offer some sort of apology/gift.

If you feel very strongly then I suppose you could write to them, marking your letters ''without prejudice''. I'd personally concentrate on cheerful things to help your mum get better quickly: after all, life happens.

Supermarket is responsible for the safety of the floor - so time for injurylawyers4you
Is it just me that finds it very sad that we live like this now? Any time there's an accident the immediate thought is for compensation.

Accidents do happen and sometimes it's just one of those things, obviously it's different if there was obvious neglegence but in this case I can't see it. The jar smashed, it was covered up but it would take a few minutes for a cleaner to get there, and the mother didn't watch where she was going. It was just an unfortunate accident.

I think you're overreacting. Your mum should have looked where she was going, you shoudl have wanred her, and accidents do happen you know.

Get over it and help your mum recover.

I wasn't with my mother in the store.

I'm not actually desperate for monetary compensation for her. An apology would have been nice though...

Why sigh? It was just an accident. They covered the spill with a basket while they went to get the things with which to sort it, your mum didn;t look where she was going and fell.

It's unfortunate she hurt herself but I don;t see what else the supermarket could have done, and I think they took adequate precautions.

Sighing simply because i disagree with how you see it is childish.

If you write to their head office, I'm sure they'll provide you with an apology and probably a voucher or something.

Maybe they will look at changing their policy to ensure that a member of staff stands next to the accident location in future (assuming they don't currently have that policy in place).

I wasn't implying that you were after compensation, I was responding to Stryders post about getting on to Injurylawyers4u. We also cross-posted so I hadn't realised that you weren't near your mother at the time, I've now changed my post.

As I said earlier I would still contact the store (and speak to a manager) to let them know what happened at the hospital, they can't really do anything if they don't know what's happened.

This is the side effect of the culture of demanding compensation for every accident that takes place on someone else's property: the supermarket couldn't apologise because an apology implies fault and hence any hypothetical lawsuit gains strength. It's like when you're not supposed to apologise after a car accident regardless of if it was your fault.

I don't believe my reaction was childish. Being patronised and told to 'get over it' was pretty pointless though.

Not pointless at all. That is my advice, to get over it and move on as it was just an accident.

If you find that patronisisng that's up to you, but it's what I'd say to a friend so it wasn't meant like that.

You asked if you were overreacting and I said that you are.
