The reason that there prices have fallen so much is that they are now using cheeper parts, infact the PC are basicaly Dell Badges Acers as they have cheep Acer parts in, Not a problem as long as your not buying because it's a DELL, as it's not anymore it's an ACER..

    My 2p'th..

    Stuart.

Which parts would be Acer then? Would that be the Intel CPU or motherboard? Or the branded Seagate or what ever HDD? I don't think Acer make RAM do they?

if you are building your own like me then you should really go to https://www.pless.co.uk its in glasgow but they do deliver you can also get discounts if your buying quite alot

Looks like they're selling a lot of unfamiliar brands at a little less or similar prices to big brand names you know and can trust.

    Re: My original Post.

Just an update to say that I ordered the system on Saturday on the internet and have received a call from Dell to arrange delivery for tomorrow.....How quick is that??

I bought this PC on behalf of my brother who knows NOTHING about computers and wanted the best that he could afford. He has children who will be using the PC for gaming and school work and wanted a reliable system that would last some time and not be outdated too soon. I searched for several days and attended various computer fairs, electrical stores and surfed the net to find the best deal. I know that I could have built a system from scratch for him but all in all, this dell deal came pretty close to the money. I was concerned that individual parts purchased from computer fairs don't come with warranties and as he lives 150 miles away from me, did not want to travel continuously to replace/upgrade his system. Again, I could have bought items from the net to put together but the same applies as above.

My brother is more than happy with his Dell deal and he has the peace of mind that 'if' anything were to go wrong, at least he has a 12 month warranty and can return the PC to Dell.

Thank you for your feedback, it has been an experience.

Wishing you all a wonderful christmas and a fantastic money saving new year!!! :)

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Sorry Steve, but I'm going to contest this. I build rigs all the time for gamers and I can easily take the Dell box apart on price, even on retail prices. And my rig would be fully upgradeable (unlike the Dell) and the mainboard wouldn't be a lump of cheap plastic (again, unlike the Dell).

Even using your example: 15" monitor @ £60, 160gb disk @ £50 and 512mb of memory @ £60 leaves you with a system for £590. And, quite frankly, dealing with Dell if it goes wrong isn't seen as a good thing by a lot of people who've had to do it. ;)

Sleepali - if you specifically want a graphics card for gaming then you should be aware that the one fitted in that box isn't exactly cutting edge. Depends what games you want it for I guess, but I'd have a good look before you commit to it.

Fact is, you pay around the same price for a machine which is less upgradeable and not 'purpose-built' for your needs. What you get in return is less hassle buying/building the machine and the more recognised and branded finished product. Horses for course. It's not a bad price from a big manufacturer, but let's not kid ourselves that it's a massive bargain.  :)

any chance of offering your services to mse members who are in the market for a new pc? ;)

I ordered on the 15th, but ive checked on my order and it is still saying it is in "Pre-Production as of 16/12/2004 23:31" ???

Expected del is 28th so we will have to wait and see...
  • I ordered a pc last night and inadvertently selected a bog standard cd-rom in error.
I immediately emailed them, as the lines were closed, and was disappointed to get a reply early this morning saying you can't change internet orders.
I can't imagine that the assembly line works overnight so when Dell say they can't change it I don't think they're being too user-friendly.
Anyway, lesson learned and I won't be putting any more business their way again. >:(

  • gasplug,

just cancel it. wait for order confirmation in email with PDF.

and reply to email address in there saying CANCEL and explain it is not what you wanted.

They ask you to check the order is what you want in the PDF.

they will prob ring you back and ask you to take it and offer you some money off if you will take it.

the machine might even be on the truck already.

thx. they've already rang to say I can cancel and re-order but cannot change existing order. Problem is the discount voucher I used has expired. Typical eh?
