Cracking Dell Deal !!

I reckon its possible to self-build an equivalent system at the Dell price. Just less hassle to have it done for you of course
I doubt you could build this system for this price...i know i tried!!!
I build computers, and you cant.....even using ebuyer as this is a similar spec that i was looking at 2 weeks ago...it was 420.00 without the monitor, hard disk, half the memory....sure youll know whats in it if you build it and youll get a better motherboard...and you wont have to deal with Dell if it goes wrong..
I would buy the floppy disk elsewhere as these cost peanuts now..not the incredible 20.00 odd dell charged
strange though i posted a better deal 2 weeks ago with the same spec, but with a 17 inch monitor, free printer, and 512mb memory, free del, inc vat for 649.00 but no one seemed interested...i guess it depends on the diff between the extra cost required of the bigger compared to the memory...will possibly be close/sameStevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -
Computer Fairs usually have good prices - plus you can huggle with them.
Ive been to many computer fairs and they arent that cheap..not much different to online....though depends what you are looking for.Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -
What is this fascination with huggling?

IMHO this system seems good value vs. the likes of Dixons for those that don't want to build a PC themselves but those that can might see fit to look elsewhere...0 -
Yes it is fairly cheap but then you get what you pay for.
I doubt that it is a good motherboard.
It will have on board sound.
And why a PCI graphics card?
What is the make of RAM? What is the make of HD?
Etc etc.
I prefer to build my own. In the end I know exactly what I am getting and I know that later I can upgrade it with no hassle. The problem with Dell is that they do use custom made bits which ensure that you cannot upgrade the machine yourself.
Eh?
PCI Express is the new agreed format for graphics cards, eventually AGP will be phased out.Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -

Strictly speacking when the PCI Express cards are compared to their AGP equivelant cards, there isnt really much of a increase in fps (2-7 ish). This has more to do with the non utilisation of the PCi express bandwidth. Once the manufactures get their heads around it the diference will be huge...maybe. The thing is they still havent utillised AGP x8!!0 -

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, it IS a good deal. Just not something I would really do:/

Its Christmas - huggles to everyone!;D0 -
It's very difficult to compare building and buying a pc
Its apples and oranges
You have to get the same or very close spec for it to be any kind of guide. Slight differences can make considerable differences in your final price.
Another thing is that prices move all the time so within a couple months certain components may be a lot cheaper
Also for windows pc if you count a legal version of windows OS it will make a difference compared to "free" versions of windows which may be included from some manufacturers.
One thing I always say is get the best, biggest and fastest components you can afford at the time because tomorrow it will be out of date.0 -
Hi Guys,
I spent a few minutes putting together this system, all from one shop(also not the cheapest one I know). If you're inclined to shop around a bit I could easily get £50-£60 off this system bringing it below the Dell.
If you can build PCs yourself it's better in the long run because they tend to be more upgradeable if you choose sensibly.
The Dell system is a good deal for a Dell but I've had the same PC for 3 years and have been upgrading gradually as bits get out of date. I've saved £££'s doing it this way which is why I never buy pre-built, you never know what you'll get when it comes to an upgrade.

Sorry Steve, but I'm going to contest this. I build rigs all the time for gamers and I can easily take the Dell box apart on price, even on retail prices. And my rig would be fully upgradeable (unlike the Dell) and the mainboard wouldn't be a lump of cheap plastic (again, unlike the Dell).
Even using your example: 15" monitor @ £60, 160gb disk @ £50 and 512mb of memory @ £60 leaves you with a system for £590. And, quite frankly, dealing with Dell if it goes wrong isn't seen as a good thing by a lot of people who've had to do it.
Sleepali - if you specifically want a graphics card for gaming then you should be aware that the one fitted in that box isn't exactly cutting edge. Depends what games you want it for I guess, but I'd have a good look before you commit to it.
Fact is, you pay around the same price for a machine which is less upgradeable and not 'purpose-built' for your needs. What you get in return is less hassle buying/building the machine and the more recognised and branded finished product. Horses for course. It's not a bad price from a big manufacturer, but let's not kid ourselves that it's a massive bargain. :)0
