I agree with Clay , i would'nt have a 15" monitor either,
for only a few pounds more you could get a 17"
A self build system has more scope for upgrading, most of the items will have at least 1 yrs warranty, some will have 3 years, some have 5 years.
Why go intel?
AMD do processors too.
Longhorn , the operating system taking over from XP will be 64bit compatible, Unlike ther intel processor.AMD already have 64bit ones, and most bench tests show the AMD to be a faster at most of them0 -
If you think your deal is good, you will LOVE this one!
Go to small business section and search for e-value code 305 - D1281
reduce warranty to 1Y CAR (Collect and Return)
Add the floppy drive
choose the 48x/32x/48x CD-RW drive
no speakers (they are not very good)
choose the Dell E153FP 15" Value Flat Panel Monitor
use code ?7NWS3?Q45F?M0 for 5% off
Total price £547.61
or choose the 19" TFT monitor instead for £690.49
and for just £11.75 more you can have the faster 533mhz RAM too!
A DVD recorder will only cost you £30 - £40 so you could add that yourself afterwards (saves you £80+VAT not taking it from Dell!)Module Description Product Code Sku Id

It's not a bad price from a big manufacturer, but let's not kid ourselves that it's a massive bargain.
Also, let's not kid ourselves that the Radeon X300 is a good video card for gaming with

Strictly speacking when the PCI Express cards are compared to their AGP equivelant cards, there isnt really much of a increase in fps (2-7 ish). This has more to do with the non utilisation of the PCi express bandwidth. Once the manufactures get their heads around it the diference will be huge...maybe. The thing is they still havent utillised AGP x8!!
I know there isnt much difference in performance but its the new agreed standard, thats all...all in the name of simplifying PC's...about time!...so AGP will slowly vanish for that reason only....not because its slowerStevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -
Wombar you only included 512 RAM, the Dell has 1024 ;)
That prices includes 2x512Mb, I just didn't copy the quantity column off the basket
.
The most important thing to remember when looking at PCs is to ensure you know what you want it for.
If all you need the PC for is Word and the Internet then Dell have some spectacular deals on basic systems that are useless for any heavy gaming or video editing etc.
But if you want a good gaming machine then self build is going to get you the best value for money in the long run because you can upgrade it gradually and save a ton of cash.I say what I like, I like what I say!0 -
Sorry Steve, but I'm going to contest this. I build rigs all the time for gamers and I can easily take the Dell box apart on price, even on retail prices. And my rig would be fully upgradeable (unlike the Dell) and the mainboard wouldn't be a lump of cheap plastic (again, unlike the Dell).
Even using your example: 15" monitor @ £60, 160gb disk @ £50 and 512mb of memory @ £60 leaves you with a system for £590. And, quite frankly, dealing with Dell if it goes wrong isn't seen as a good thing by a lot of people who've had to do it.
Sleepali - if you specifically want a graphics card for gaming then you should be aware that the one fitted in that box isn't exactly cutting edge. Depends what games you want it for I guess, but I'd have a good look before you commit to it.
Fact is, you pay around the same price for a machine which is less upgradeable and not 'purpose-built' for your needs. What you get in return is less hassle buying/building the machine and the more recognised and branded finished product. Horses for course. It's not a bad price from a big manufacturer, but let's not kid ourselves that it's a massive bargain. :)
not sure if i agree......where do you get your 15 in tft for 60.00 from....i was referring to a 17inch tft..cheapest is about 145 ish now...i dont agree with regards to being able to build the same spec for 649.00 with 17 in monitor....but it will be close....ie within £20-40.....
BUT yes i agree if you build it yourself you know whats in it....and the motherboard will be miles better...
also dont forget with the dell deal you get the Windows OS or perhaps that fabulous recovery disk and a free printer (ok, ok dont laugh...you can sell the printer on ebay for 15-30.00)
mind you arent we in the throw away society now....keep a pc for 2 years, throw it away and buy a new one.....not far off though..look at dvd players or even tft screens (it dont work, bin it...unless your lucky)
Regrettably i dont have time to build/upgrade my computer anymore, so the Dell option may be a reasonable one (with gritted teeth!)....not bothered about games as i have an xbox which is fine.....
my problem is i need a whole new system as mine...dont laugh...is a pentium 2 350mhz dinosaur....which cost me 1600 built to order....top sepc was the good old 400mhz at the time but the chips were not worth the extra money...would have been nearer 1900-2000 for a top spec system (unless you went to PC world - 350mhz based system worse than mine was £2600 and a 400mhz one £3000 please :o!)Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60
