A little common sense doesn't go amiss though!
Common sense? The common sense was in not serving you!
What do you think the guy serving you cares most about? A few quid profit OR losing his job, not being able to pay his mortgage, a criminal conviction and fine, loss of career, face in local paper etc etc?
Faced with the possible alternative, anybody who thinks you might be around the 21 yo mark is just protecting their livelihood. The repercussions in not doing so are just too great.0 -

Blame the government or the shops for not bringing out another form of ID that is easy to get and doesn't cost anything rather than calling the people working the shop who are just doing there job and trying not to risk loosing it a busybody.
What your talking about is a I.D. card! But did we not fight a war in the forties to avoid such an oppressive regime??Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -
I was in the Co-op in Wem in Shropshire last Friday evening.
The bloke in front of me had a trolley full of all the stuff for a barbeque as it was a cracking evening.
Because he had HIS TEENAGE DAUGHTER with him doing the shopping, they wouldn't sell him any of the alcohol in his trolley!!!
Two tills further down, there were two girls buying a four pack of Strongbow who couldn't have been over 15 and they were served without a question being asked!!!
Talk about taking the p*ss!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
After all a credit card sized free ID card for everyone would be perfect, just nobody has the sense to bring one in.
Where I grew up (in t'coun'reesoide) there was so little crime the police appeared to focus most of their energy on underage drinking. We all applied for something called a Portman ID card as soon as we were 18, which was free and accepted by all local pubs. If your birthday was later in the academic year you really struggled to socialise with your peers. Is that not scheme still going? They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

I'm not saying we should bring out a national ID card but enough people seem to moan about the fact there isn't one that they can easily get hold of and not have to pay for.
I'm quite happy carrying my provisional license with me all the time.0 -
Right okay, here's what you guys can do. When you want to buy alcohol, look for one of the older cashiers, because of the following reasons.
a) They might break the rules because they're behind in their training, don't believe the repercussions apply to them, or because they simply see no problem with underage drinking
b) They're probably better at judging age
c) When they refuse to sell it to you, you probably won't come complaining on a forum because you'll be too embarrassed when it's not someone younger than you refusing you.
What Volcano and Helix say is correct. Even though 95% of my earnings for my job were extra cash and not actually for living, and the fact I didn't really enjoy my job, I really had no intention of risking my job and everything else for you. Just get the ID for a mere £7 for life (the cheapest I've found that isn't an instore offer is £10, still cheap), or go shop in a more expensive shop that's more relaxed on the rules.
I will admit this though, it's sad that the rules always seem to be more lax on cigarettes than alcohol. Now in my store everyone was terrible with training, so it's possible this is rubbish (Helix, you might know if this is true or not). But supposedly if you were a cashier under 18 you needed authorisation to sell alcohol, but not cigarettes...come on, seriously?0 -

Yeah thats true, alcohol needs to be authorised but cigarettes and lottery don't. I don't really know why. I'm over 18 so I don't need authorisation but I was working in the kiosk one day with someone under 18 and they sold cigarettes with no problems, but as soon as someone came through with alcohol they needed to get authorisation.
Its probably due to the fact the age limit for cigarettes used to be 16 and when they changed the law to make it 18 the government probably didn't put in the restriction that only those over 18 could sell them.0 -

Everyone should carry some form of ID
or just don't be so pig headed if the police want to take your photo if you don't have ID on you :rotfl:0
