    Maybe your glasses were filthy?
I've been to Scotland several times, found it beautiful, green, picturesque and very friendly. I absolutely loved Edinburgh with its amazing castle and its old, narrow streets. Only the accents were terrible ;)
That'd be the Polish Edinburgh welcomed with open arms :D - and who have been missed since they left (mainly) - and that's a genuine sentiment according to friends in the city. The HQ for a part (if not all) of the Polish exilled army in WW2 was near to Edinburgh in the Borders. They had a big (live) bear as their mascot IIRC.

I'd have said scary - you've got to go through Dundee, South Queensferry or Dunfermline before you get to any civillised areas.... (Sorry EDTA - any other civillised area).
