I can't get this right,I either do too much or not enough. How much per person?

My Italian friend says 100g each, but I find that far too much.

I don't measure. If it's fusseli or such I half fill a saucepan with dried pasta as it will double in size. This will feed 4. Spagetti, I put a some in a small cicle on my hand made by my index finger onto my thumb. This is enough for one person. Fresh pasta doesn't double in size so I judge a portion from it's current size.

Being Italian I would agree with your friend on a minimum 100 g for a main course, it also depends what you serve with it - e.g. a really rich meat sauce might fill you up more quickly than a thin tomato sauce.

Don't forget that if you cook too much spaghetti you can always use the leftovers (already dressed with the sauce) as a 'spaghetti omelette'! It's delicious!

Thanks guys, but what is a handful of spaghetti? and how big is your saucepan? :) I boil my pasta in a huge stockpot! 3 oz sounds about right.

I usually use about one and a half ounces of pasta per person. Makes about 3 ounces of cooked pasta.

Good grief, I cooked a 500g packet of spaghetti for the 4 of us the other night, and there wasn't any left over. That works out an average of 4 1/2 ounces per person. Dh, ds-13, ds-10 and me. That means each one of us eats 3x the amount that Black Saturn's family does  . No wonder I can't get our spending down to the amount that she does.

I get six to seven good servings out of a standard 37p bag (19p if economy range), with the addition (if using whole bag) of two tins toms and a large onion, plus mushrooms and two packs of Beanfeast Bolognese style.

Works out about 40p a serving when made up.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
