I put a big handful in the pot for each person and then another for luck. Its better to cook too much than too little because pasta is so easily used up for lunch the next day.

wow - i usually have 250g of spaghetti for myself in one meal (with some mince and pasta sauce) and that just about fills me up. 16p asda economy pack gone in two meals :P
  • I usually just have about 25 or 30 grams dry weight. My bags of pasta last ages, and considering the price they charge for wheat-free stuff, I'm glad they do.

Try using ordinary fine soya mince. Sainsbury's do a bag for 59p. Lots more in it than the Beanfeast.

I measure pasta on a plate, pour out half of what you would like to eat ( a bit more if hungry) as it doubles up.
  • I sort of go with Caterinas views, for me a "slack handfull" is about right but as I love my pasta I try to balance the size of the pasta with the size of the lumps that go with it. What I mean is that a hearty chunky meal with lots of big stuff gets larger pasta than say a Spag Bol, however in emergency 5 nests of Tagliatelli goes just right with anything.

I do a slack handfull per person if we are having other things on the plate e.g. chicken / veggies. Two slack handfuls per person if it is a pasta meal e.g. I'm mixing a sauce / mushrooms / pesta into the pasta.

It's really interesting to read the wide range of amounts people use...from 1oz to 10ozs! I love it that we are all so different!

We use about 3 oz pp, but i don't measure it anymore, just do it by eye.

This is my method too. Spaghetti is a bit harder to judge.
I was at my Mum's for tea earlier this week & she asked how much spag she should do for the 4 of us. I gave her my guess-timated amount & she said that she would cook that much for only 3 of them! We went with my amount plus a bit more for luck & it was plenty. She did admit that perhaps she had been over generous with her portions in the past! No-one complained that they didn't have enough.

Snap, I measure this way too.....however, I then split the pasta 50-50 with my OH.....not sure it is meant to work this way!!! There is a big size difference between us, so surely he should get more....not likely if I'm doing the cooking!!
